Hello, new here to the forums. I'm getting ready to order a new Tacoma(1st Toyota), and could use a little advice on picking a model. I thought I wanted the Sport, but have 2nd guessed myself after looking at the Off road version. I prob won't do that much off roading, mostly work and back in New England. Any advice/opinions appreciated, TY.

Offroad if you want the locker and suspension
Sport if you want a cool scoop

I have a 16 off road and will be getting an 18 off road. I don't do much off roading either but I chose the off road because it has better suspension and soaks up the bumps and pot holes more. I consider it as a "luxury" truck, with all the tech and leather seats and such, that you can confidently drive over any thing the roads throw at you and park where ever.

Welcome to the forum, I chose the off road over the sport for several reasons. Same price, off road has more goodies like rear locker, crawl control, no fake hood scoop. It’s better to have the gear and not need it than to not have it and need it.

Do yourself a favor and test ride both models. Make sure you drive aggressive and test the suspension. No amount of info on TW can replace are real test drive.

that said, if you are not doing to do serious off roading, go with the Sport. No need to pay for a rear locker and beefier brakes if you aren't gonna use it... plus you get a hood scoop on the Sport.

At least in 2016-2017 year, the locker didn't add to the price. Better off getting the OR because it has more bang for your buck.

    Like, so many.
I actually had a 16 Sport and now have a 17 OR. I was in an accident that totaled the first truck. I like the OR better. I think it has much more value. The Sport should really have something else to set it apart: dual exhaust, functional scoop, CAI, something. When I had the opportunity to get a different truck, I realized that all of my mods were to make my Sport more like an OR. So I just got an OR. Both are great trucks though and I definitely off roaded in my Sport. It's very capable. For the money, the OR offers more.

IMO, "better" suspension is very subjective. If you live in an area that has crappy roads, then yes, the OR suspension is "better" (softer). If you drive fast and like to take quick turns, then the Sport has stiffer suspension which is "better". Again... test drive both yourself!

I was in the same boat. What it boiled down to for me was they were basically the same price with the same interior options, but the off road has more functionality with the lockers and crawl control and the sport was just appearance. I knew I was as going to change the appearance on my own, so for the same price I went with stuff that would be harder to add later.

    This^

How many people with a Tacoma do you know modded their Tacoma to be a street cruiser. There are a small handful I'm sure. But the general consensus is, if your getting a Tacoma, your going to see some dirt.

    $38,000 decision

Nothing wrong with someone doing research, unlike those who complained AFTER the fact without ever test driving.

There are some unanswered questions here.
    1. How do you like to drive? If you like to hug the curves, the Sport is better. If you have plans that involve suspension mods anyway, it really doesn't matter.
    2. Are you married or in a serious relationship? With the Sport you will have more panties dropped for you cause "skewp".
    3. How much do you care for cosmetics? The Sport has all paint matched bumpers and fender flares. The OR has black flares which look good on certain colors. Quicksand is better on the OR, its too much on the Sport.
BBP looks great on either one. Barcelona Red looks better on the Sport.
    4. Do you plan to keep the truck for a long time? Depending on your area resale may be easier and bring more value with the OR.

I traded my 4x2 sport in for the off road. I wanted the locker and a 4x4. So thats my vote

    1- I don't drive very fast, that's for sure
2- Skewp might come in handy if I get divorced...
3- I'm leaning towards the metallic grey, the black flares kind of blend in, so I don't think this makes much of a difference
4- Probably. I had my F150 for 15 years, and still have my 1978 Land Rover series 3 (since 1994)
