For me it's all about the resale value. With a Tacoma the resale is so good that if you purchase it don't like it you a have a much better trade in. Tacomas hold their value. Very strong

You could always look for a 2015 TRD OR with low miles if you are that worried.

I can say this fully loaded pro 4x can take a beating off road. It handles great, the seating position is FAR superior, IMO, to the Tacoma.

I still would buy the Tacoma because of technology, looks, mpg's, and resale value.

Here's a picture of my pro 4x rental while my taco is in for frame replacement

I'm not sure if they ever fixed radiator cross contamination problem. There was a class action law suit against Nissan in regards to this problem
on the Frontier V6s. Besides they are going to replace the Frontier in the next couple years. btw I do like Nissan products too. I would love to pick up a 370z.
As far as the OR goes I'm very happy with it. No issues and it did get through a lot of snow last year even with the stock OR AT tires.

They don't care if you beat the hell out of your rental?
That's a great way to be able to test drive something, that's for sure

No different than how I drive my Tacoma. Told them that when I got it. One trip through car was last week and all looks good

I can say that the skid plates are tough! My 1st gen taco had more clearance

There's no comparison between the two vehicles. Drastically different ball games.

I transitioned from a frontier to toyota. The frontiers have a nasty design flaw, the radiator coolant and the transmission fluids can actually start to mix, the flaw is in the radiator. You can do a bypass to avoid it but it happened to me, and Nissan doesn't even acknowledge the problem. The dealership even tried to hide it from me when it happened. Do not buy Nissan. Toyota is far superior.

Interesting point, but the SMOD issue on the Frontier/Xterra was limited to auto transmissions, and also seems to be eliminated post 2010. I has two trans replaced on my '09 Tacoma within the first 14K miles, and there are a scary number of 3rd gen trans issues of both flavors. Both the Tacoma and the Frontier have issues, yet both are very good trucks. It all comes down to preference.
