I just drove by 12Mk6gti's house and dropped two more bolts on the driveway. Can't wait to see where this ends.

Did you ever look around a garage, under the bench, maybe in small containers; and see assorted fasteners, bolts, nuts, clamps, hangers?

Now you have a start on your own, collection of mysterious items.

If all seems fine, you are in good shape.

It's normal, every time I work on mine I have spare bolts, I just think of it as weight reduction because...... Race truck:burnrubber:

That size bolt is used all over the engine bay of these trucks. I can't remember everything that had to be taken loose to do the timing belt. But I would check the dip stick bracket, ac comp brackets, alt. brackets, radiator brackets, double check the timing belt cover and fan shroud. It could also be something as simple as one of the brackets that holds the wiring harness in a certain location.

I'm leaning towards the a/c or alternator brackets first, before I open up the timing belt cover and have a look around!

I found where the bolt was supposed to go! Right under the thermostat and near the crank position sensor.... I guess during the removal process of the thermostat I figured that bolt was supposed to come out to allow the thermostat to be removed.... Super happy I found where it goes! I noticed the lonely hole while I was down under the truck doing the oil change and just happened to look up.

Can I get someone to verify that there are supposed to be 2 bolts in the same location as in my photo? Thanks

Thank you for the great post and picture. I had the exact same problem and exact same bolt. when doing a timing belt and WP for a friend and her Tacoma, I carefully removed every bolt and then bagged and labeled them. When I installed the water pump, I had one "extra" water pump bolt. I counted the number of holes on the old pump and the new pump three times. I knew I would not have mislabeled it. Eventually I went on and finished the timing belt replacement and tune-up. The truck starts fine, runs fine, doesn't leak. But now I will go look at that spot tonight.
