Original thread and back story: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/thats-all-folks.752439/

So, insurance is dicking me around, basically won't pay out nearly what my truck is worth. Granted I will say trying to find a comp for a 2011 ACLB 2.7 4WD isn't the easiest. (Bonus story at the end) I've gone back and fourth, and after telling them this was simply not acceptable I'm opting to purchase the truck back. I have some ideas on what I will do with it, but I'll get to that in a future post.

Now, I asked them how much the buy back is, $5300. I am now going to play their game in reverse. This truck isn't' worth CLOSE to $5300 with it being totaled. I already signed up on autoauctions.io to see past sales. I found maybe 6 that are *close* but not quite exactly the same, like one was a shortbed, one wasn't an access cab, that kind of thing. I'm trying to get as close as I can to my truck.

Would anyone be willing to help me find some salvage history prices? I actually have Mitchell's Estimator they use to calculate costs (which will be extra fun to run everything through that when I submit my counter offer)

This is the specs I'm trying to get close to

    2011 ACLB
    2.7 2TR-FE
    Auto
    4WD
    165k iirc on the clock.
~200 miles of zip 55901 or something in the cities like 55116 should work.
Their original report either went out to 200 or 250 miles to find their comps, I know some were hitting WI, and I'm in MN.
Trying to keep the scope the same as their estimate.

Truck has rear end damage, rear bumper was torn off, rear axles snapped, and the driver side box, door, fender, window, all smashed. Not "t-boned" bad smashed, but, smashed in pretty well.

I do not have pics yet, will post again with plans and update when it comes time to get back to the truck.

So I'm looking for trucks with primary rear end and side damage. No bags deployed, engine starts, does not drive (broken axles duh).

Bonus story time. I may have commented somewhere about a 2006 Tacoma I looked at local to me, after test driving it (and the sales rep showed me the car fax that it has been rear ended once, otherwise was clean) something was off. Tacoma ended up having a salvage title after I ran the vin. I mentioned this on the phone to my insurance adjuster, I believe we got a little off topic about used car/truck prices and I made some off cuff remark about how this 2006 with a salvage title, they are asking $14,500. He then made a comment(s) something along the lines of how people don't understand that if your vehicle has a salvage title that it severely impacts the prices etc, and how he would never recommended buying a salvage vehicle, ect etc. In which we had some back and fourth about the used car market and prices etc. This was, about a week ago.

Today, get a call from him. I again explain that I will not accept their offer, it's un-reasonable, my truck was MINT (he kept going on about the missing door panel, I was putting speakers in and had one off, do they deducted a whole $70, and how the interior was "fair" because of some cigarette burns. I do smoke, I told him I honestly don't recall ANY burns in my truck, but just for arguments sake and benefit of the doubt, lets just say there was a few $130 deduction. My truck OUTSIDE and INSIDE was MINT. So, even with that, $200 in deductions, I'm failing to understand. More or less I've just been battling that #1, the truck was mint, #2 it's kind of a weird combo, took me a long time to find, #3 THE USED CAR PRICES AND TRUCK PRICES AND ESPECIALLY TACOMAS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE NOW.....

I pull up, the 2006.... which, is priced pretty close to my offer.... (yes it's a v6 and manual, mine isn't, that's not the point) https://www.rochesterford.com/used-Rochester-2006-Toyota-Tacoma-Base+V6+SR5-5TEUU42N26Z156829

    ***
Edit: I have reported that dealer, and truck, to Toyota's Midwest sales director. Have not got a response yet. Feel free to annoy them if you're bored via their online little chat thing. Would hate to see that hidden and sold to some unsuspecting customer.
    ***

So I said, look.... this is a SALVAGE TITLED TRUCK, and they are asking $14.5. Trying to prove my point that the used vehicle prices are high, and this estimate is falling real fucking short. He immediately said well that's a v6, 2006, etc. I then said again, yes, I understand this is not similar to my truck, but, IT IS SALVAGE and very close to what you're offering me.... He responds with something like and depending on what happened you know with the accident or salvage..... I can't speak to that truck and it's value (and shit I don't know what he said word for word, but was along the lines that even though it was salvage that maybe it wasn't so bad so it wouldn't really effect the price).

At this point I reminded him of our conversation the week prior, about this very truck in fact, and paraphrased what he told me. Recalling how just having a salvage title, greatly reduces the value of a vehicle. I then added, this is my work line, VOIP, and all calls are recorded, but I do recall you saying something basically to that effect.... I wish... I could have seen his face. No more back peddling from that one. My 1 and only point was, if a salvage truck, same as mine or not (reasonably close enough I guess), is priced for about what you're offer is, there seems to be an issue here....

Anyways.... that's the end of the story(ies). Will update as I go. But yeah, if anyone can help me find some past sales history. I would love to play their estimate game in reverse and buy my truck back cheaper.

I watched the salvage auctions for almost a year and $5300 is a reasonable price. I bet that it would get that much or more if it went to an auction. Just depends on how much work it needs.

Sign up for IAA, one of the larger salvage auction companies. Look what they are selling for.

If they offered you 13.5 -14.5k that’s pretty dead on. I found 4 trucks based on your area code 4cyl. Have the mileage for 18-19. We all think our trucks are mint and want as much as we can get for them so I feel your pain. But it’s worth what it’s worth at the end of the day. FYI if you smoke in your truck and hate to say it smells like an ashtray it with even less, smoke is one of the hardest smells to get rid of. Good luck imo if they offered 13-14 take and it and find a truck. Plenty of guys will pay 5k at auction Do a half ass repair to it and sell and make a couple grand. It done every day. Good luck.

I hope you get a good deal and everything works out..

But any interior that has been smoked in is never going to be "mint"

Yeah I'm having a hard time following. You're arguing because they deducted $200 from your settlement?

Some fights aren't worth it. You almost never get a fully comped replacement after bending metal.

If it were me I'd concentrate on getting a new daily and let this one go.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
It's kind of hard to follow but I'm a little slow this time of the day.

Howzabout a simple equation describing the issue?

    You want how much? >

    They're offering you what? >

16, I really wouldn't go by what you see online, at least not in my area. Majority of the time if it isn't a scam (there's LOADS of scam tacoma sales) the trucks are beat, have some issues, every single one I have walked from. Mine was damn near flawless, outside of gas oil and tires, I only had to replace a stuck caliper and it was pretty much due for brakes at that time anyways. Never had anything breakdown on me, never once didn't start, it was basically new. I guess you would have to take my word on it, the trucks listed in those price ranges, if they exist, are not very good examples. At least, I have yet to find one that's even close to the condition mine was in.

5300, yeah, isn't bad. But since they yanked me around, I don't mind playing the game backwards anyways (not to mention, I actually have NO WHERE to put a truck right now), they have been a huge hassle from the start, I would have to constantly call and ask what was going on (it's been what, over a month now?) and they just seemed clueless 90% of the time. They didn't know it was officially a total loss, until I called in, because I saw an email from a few days previous I didn't look at which had a link to the outcome of what the adjuster decided. No phone calls, nothing. If can knock it down a few grand for the hell of it, I will. I've dealt with enough insurance companies the buttons to push are easy. One being, they really don't like holding on to your car long, it costs them money. One tactic I did years and years ago, (actually I still have a pending claim on my SOs car (for fuck sake NEVER use the app to submit claims), is simply refusing to take any money, it keeps your case open, and makes their numbers look bad. The reason I'm doing that, is they simply won't pay even a 1/4 of what it will cost to fix the front bumper after a hit and run) I had "totaled" my e30 m3, I just (again if you read the other parenthesis of side tangentness) kept rejecting the offer, for months, slowly the price went up and up and up, I eventually caved and took about 3/4 of what I feel I should have got, because I was young and very broke at the time.

Edit: So, for 4+ weeks, they have been paying storage fees for not only my truck, but the uhaul, they also have towed it twice, these costs add up....

It's a bad habit yes, and I'm real anal about it. Have to be on the highway, windows cracked down, I've only once a few cars back hit the A pillar and burned it. I bet you I could take any of my cars, and you would have no idea I smoked in them.

As I mentioned before this, I'm pretty anal about smoking, honestly if you just jumped in my truck, you don't smell anything. Non-smokers even comment and ask how I do it. I've found the people who ash in their cars and hot box etc, those are the real stinky bastards. And again, as I said above, I'll put a dead president down you could hop in any of my cars and you wouldn't know I smoked in it ever, I'm that confident.

I'm waiting on pics, but that looks close to about the damage I have. I'm hoping the frame can be pulled back out. I'll probably just toss the bed, put on a flatbed of some flavor, and just rock a $5k truck and care a lot less about it than I used to. I might even throw trash on the ground or an empty soda can.

This goes back before I totaled my truck, but I was looking up what similar Tacomas were selling for, Gen 2, same miles, 4WD ACLB, lower ends were 19, upper was 22. I feel 18 would have been fair in this market. I see things like a 91 f150 (clean I'll give it that) list for 8k. If you have a 4wd truck here, that runs and drives, and it's not a total rust bucket, its worth 5k+ all day long, if it's clean, your 7-9 all day, any make or model.

Just for fun. I looked several all over the country. 16k is about what it’s worth. It not flawless and definitely not like new. It’s a 11 yr old , 160k mile smoked in truck. And I’ll take the bet if you smoked a single cig in your car I’d smell but that’s beside the point. Buy it back or take the green and move on.

Buying it back, was just asking for help. Car markets do vary across the country, not sure if you were aware of that. Like, we have dealers that bring cars up from the south since ours rust out, because.... rust free ones are cheaper there.

yeah. If you buy it back for 5 and put the other ten in it to fix you’ve still did good cause its your truck and you know how it been kept so all is good especially if you plan on keeping till it dies it got plenty of life still in it.
