I’m currently in the market for a camper shell for a 1st Gen Tacoma.

I’ll be building out the rig (Tacoma + shell) for living/travel purposes. I’m a writer by trade and I’ve got the opportunity to support myself through writing as I travel anywhere my truck can take me, play outside, and write about my adventures for a couple different magazines.

I'm looking for a high-top camper shell— think Leer 122, and I like windows.

I came across this shell that I LOVE on FB Marketplace but purchasing it didn't work out.

I haven't seen this kind before, and I'm curious if anyone can identify the make & model of it so that I might find another one used or even possibly purchase one new depending on cost.

Alternately, if you know of camper shells that have a similar design— high-top, lots of windows, not a Leer 122, please point me in that direction.

    Thanks!

I think you're going to have trouble finding that style. Note that it's shown on a Mazda (which was a twin of the Ford Ranger). That generation of trucks has been out of production for at least 10 years.

Just want to make sure that you understand that that shell would have never fit your Tacoma. Shells are year, make & model specific to fit each unique bed.

it never ceases to amaze me how every time i ask a question on one of these forums, the responses i get are rarely (if ever) answers to the questions that i am actually asking, but rather some piece of information that someone else has decided that i need based on the question i've asked— regardless of a complete lack of any background information about me, what i may or may not already know, or why i'm asking the question that i'm asking...

    so again, let me ask:
can anyone help me identify the make & model of the camper shell shown in my OP?

    thanks!

Closest thing that would fit your truck directly on a quick search is a Leer 120 Highrise Cap.

A "Highrise" cap or camper shell is what you're looking for.

Doesn't look like ARE makes one for a 1st gen anymore.

That one pictured just looks like one that has every optional window installed.

They can be ordered like that or with no windows at all, whatever you're willing to pay for.

Wow, there’s no need to get rude. You did say in your original post that you tried to get that shell in the ad but it didn’t work out which would lead most people to believe that you may not have realized that an old Mazda shell would not fit your truck. At least once a week people pop on here and ask “ will this Ford or Chevy shell fit my truck ? “ or “ I just bought this shell and it doesn’t fit what do I do “ so it is a common issue and I was simply trying to make sure that you understood that little diddy of info. Have fun & good luck !

Rude? Wow, you must get your feelings hurt a lot if that's rude...

I fully understand why you felt the need to tell me that the camper shell in the picture wouldn't fit on a Tacoma, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not the answer to the only question I asked ("please help me identify the make & model of this camper shell"), and rather something *you* thought I needed to know based on assumptions / inferences you made.

It's not a big deal, it's just something that happens to me every time I post a question on a vehicle forum and I find it flummoxing. It seems to be a difference of ideology or something. I don't assume that other people don't know the things that I know, and therefore I only offer my knowledge / information when it's asked for. The modus operandi on vehicle forums seems to be quite the opposite and that often makes it frustrating for those of us that don't operate that way.

    Don't take it personally.

I know it's not the exact answer you're looking for, but it is a high top, and LOTS of windows....

    Every time?

I wonder if it’s the forums, the questions, or your critique of the responses.

Seems odd you never get an answer to the questions you ask.

I know your struggle and I see this happen all the time. One thing that can help prevent these types of responses in the future is to try to say that you are aware of these things in the original post.

Think about it like you are calling customer service to get help about a product that you bought. They will ask you multiple questions that are usually fairly obvious to you, but they don't know that they are obvious to you.

Anyway, the people that are saying that topper is for a mazda/ranger doesn't help because I can clearly see it is NOT designed for a mazda/ranger based on how the front matches the back of the cab. It is clearly lower and the angle does not match.

I'm guessing you want to find the manufacturer of that topper so that you can use that information when you search in the used market? When I was looking I would use search terms like "truck topper" "truck cap" "truck shell" and rarely put the actual manufacturer. This is because most sellers will not actually list it or do not know. Yes you have to look through many more ads, but there really aren't THAT many.

HI! thank you so much for your thoughtful response, I really appreciate it.

you are spot on, I know that specific topper wouldn't "fit" on my truck (just like it didn't really "fit" on that Mazda), I just want the make & model for research/searching purposes.

so far I have primarily been searching generically ("truck topper" or "camper shell") but occasionally I see used ones listed by brand, so sometimes I search "Leer shell/topper" or "ARE shell topper" too. knowing the brand of the shell in the pictures would only give me more terms to use as I search, potentially giving me more search results.

I am also still considering purchasing a new shell and if I know the manufacturer of the one in the photos, I can find out if they make anything that would work on a Tacoma.

anyway, thanks for your time & help!

Looks similar to a ProTop model 300. slight differences but relatively similar. Not sure if they are still around or not but I had a buddy that had one that looked similar on his old ranger.

Edit: century toppers has a T class that looks very similar and you may be able to get those with additional windows on the high rise.

    good luck with the search!
