After hunting with my pops trusty 270 for many many years, I finally decided to go buy my own hunting rifle. The springfield waypoint 2020 in .308.
I'm looking at the Leupold vx6 in 3-18x44. I like the cds system they have and the fire dot/laminated reticle.

Which scope would you recommend for this rifle?

What will you hunt with it and where (Woods, fields, mountains)?

3-9x40 is lighter and all you need for the ballistic limitations of a 20” barreled 308. I prefer Vortex over Leupold but both are good optics.

Can't go wrong with Leupold. Love my Mk4. US Optics is nice too.

Sorry, I can’t help much. I hunt deer in the woods of Wisconsin where I rarely shoot beyond 60 yards. I like to use a scope with no more than 6X magnification. I don’t know about the mountains.

+1 to this. That's really more of a tactical rifle. Unless you're a professional shooter, it would probably be unethical to attempt a shot at an animal more than 150-200 yards away. Thus, 3-9x is going to be plenty strong. Please don't use it as a mountain gun, it might be fine for thicker woods where you can't get a clear shoot in excess of 100 yards anyway.

I thought the same thing at first (heavy tacticool rifle) but it actually weighs 6lbs 9oz so not too bad. Light enough to still carry in the field though by no means anywhere close to my list of actual hunting rifles.

OK. I wasn't referring to the weight at all, rather the 20 inch barrel and limitations of a .308 regardless.

Got it. A decent shooter from a solid position will do fine out to 300 yards. My short barrel 308 load was a Nosler 165gr Accubond at 2600fps. I zero all my hunting rifles with a max point blank range zero and that gives a dead hold out to 300 yards on a deer and hits with 1500ft/lbs still.

I highly recommend Steiner. TractOptics is also good. Meopta also has a good reputation.
I'm planning on getting a Steiner Predator 4 4-16x50 for a 308 I have. I currently have a Steiner H4Xi 4-16x56 on a .300 Win Mag and I have nothing to say but good things about it.
308 is more than capable of longer distances than you'll probably be shooting, I've taken whitetail out to 300 with no issues. I know I don't get anywhere close to that distance in the woods, which is why I am going for a 50mm objective. To me light capture is the most important factor.

I have this optic on my Mini-14. Been great so far, although I'm not the biggest fan of the TMR reticle or no zero stop. Got for a good price though so I can't complain.

You’re completely wrong. I killed two moose at 350 yards with a 20” barrel 308.

an extra 2-3” gets you 100fps which is inconsequential.

I’m a Swarovski Man myself. But always thought Leupold is very good, those VX-6 are very very nice.

Similar to mine. Barnes TTSX 168 gr at 2620. The only time I recovered bullets is on 1000 lb moose at 300+ yards. Sitting next to the skin on the far side.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm doing some load development as of right now also, using 165g hammer bullets.

Hammer bullets don't have one in 168g, im in california so my choice of ammo is limited to non lead only.
