I'm not saying get something all meaningful and crap. I have several tats and they all have a story behind them. Like one time my brother said let's get inked, and one time my son said let's get inked. Stuff like that. I have 3 kids, so I have 3 lady bugs on my wrist. If you've ever seen a group of lady bugs, they're all bunched together like a family. I have a bass clef on my finger because music was my first love and has gotten me through 2 divorces. Or go with a monkey, you can never go wrong with a monkey.

I was a Test Engineer in an air compressor R&D lab. We had a technician that was very careless. Reached his left hand out to "check alignment" on a rotating driveshaft. The driveshaft was being driven by a 900 hp dynamometer to power a big compressor. Well........a balance weight on the shaft snagged his wedding ring. His finger was degloved in a fraction of an instant. The test was shutdown. Then we gathered the finger parts, iced them, hauled his a55 to the hospital. Docs had to amputate the finger. The aftermath involved Hazmat clean up, accident investigation, more training, more guards.

I never will forget this. I was in the Control Room running the test computer and the dyno controls. He touched the driveshaft just before I hit the Emergency Stop. I saw him reaching over the guards.

I quit wearing my wedding band that day. Haven't worn it since, been nearly 30 years. I have to remind the wife, the wedding ring is not what makes me married. The reason is much deeper than a symbolic gold ring.

Something to think about with a "ring" tat. What if you separate and divorce????

I'll never understand the mentality of bypassing safety controls. And I'm a frequent violator of minor rules, but certain things like seatbelts, fall protection, and LOTO are not to be fucked with.

We had two fatalities at our mines this year, the first was a fall from the top of a railcar, and the second was because someone reached into a jaw crusher without a) locking it out and b) briefing the control room.

Having my melon squashed is not exactly in my top 10 of ideal ways to go.

This. I never wore a seatbelt until I got in my accident at 28, I will never not wear one since.

In your line of work especially it's asinine not to protect yourself.

There is a gif out there that would surely earn me an involuntary vacation if I posted it.

There's a scene in Monty Python's Meaning of Life where a convicted criminal is allowed to choose his method of execution. He chose well. :D

So much of the time its just a lapse of attention, it never really reaches the 'is this safe?' part of the brain. Even when you have a book of rules 2 inches thick, people have to actually process them. One of the initiatives that was big a while back for us was the watching the guy next to you initiative, brothers keeper or some other name. Makes alot of sense.

On a lighter note, I once had a hard hat that had a tag in it that said 'this hat does not offer unlimited protection'. I got rid of it and got one without that tag

IMO, this is still your winner. When I got my first, I was in Hawaii with my bestie and his wife. As I was undecided, I asked her where to put my design. She said my chest. There it is. Good luck on your choice.

Go check out the “suckytattoos” page on IG and just blindly pick one

but srs - for my bachelor party I too chose to get a tattoo. It was a simple concept on my bicep. The date of our upcoming wedding in Roman numerals with an infinity sign tailing off symbolizing from that day forward...that lasted 4 years :bananadead:

It has since been covered, twice, by a Wolf and added to with various other tattoos and as of next Wednesday will be completed to a complete half sleeve from elbow to shoulder. So my advice would be to choose wisely. The wife. Not the tattoo...

My final food for thought. I’m now remarried and learned my lesson the first time. So this time I got a tattoo 4 months after the wedding. My now wife and I met on the dating app ‘Bumble’ so I have a geometric pattern of hexagons on my forearm resembling a honeycomb with two bees. She loves it :D

Crazy, sad, bad experience and story. We talk about these fails alot at work during safety meetings once a week. Just the word 'deglove' scares the shit out of me and makes me think twice/thrice, think smart or just think and stick to your safety procedures. PPE wouldn't have helped its is needed but its your last defense. And yes don't wear any jewelry around moving machinery and put the long hair up and loose clothing gone. Not allowed ever where I work, even if you are behind a computer most of the time(not me but just saying).

Sorry for the off topic I just saw deglove and had to type something

OP- good luck with your decision. I thought about getting inked for years mainly because I was dating a girl that has some very tasteful tats but I'm still just a semi pale white dude
