We're not alone. My ears perked up to some abomination coming up the hill the other day. Turns out it was a nicely modded JK but holy rotten hell did it sound bad. Reminded me yet again not to spend good money on an ass cannon for my beloved 2nd Gen.

I went oem when I replaced mine. It lasted 13 years before the muffler got a hole in it. Any aftermarket exhaust I've had on other vehicles, didn't even come close to lasting that long.
Everything, including hardware was less than the prices for either of those you've posted.

An exhaust by itself isn't gonna do anything but change the sound. That gets the gases out. You're still being choked out by the intake side. For that, the only real power increase will be a supercharger.
From what I've read, there really isn't a lot out there for this motor.

Eh getting rid of the stock manifolds in favor for some proper headers has shown benefits. But anything cat back is pretty much zero gains. Just like an aftermarket CAI on an NA'd motor.... hell even supercharged the stock intake is good till you get into smaller pulleys.

But are the headers even worth the minimal gains without doing anything to the intake side?

I have the full Cold air intake from them as well as the 3 Inch exhaust and noticed a power difference. Put just doing a exhaust won't do much. If you want to gain some power you need to do Air intake and exhaust together.

On a side note. Just heard from AFE and the are sending me a new tip for my exhaust sense if faded from black.

OEM. They last well. Power gains from aftermarket seem minimal, atleast if your engine is NA. And the 4.0, while reliable, doesnt exactly produce beautiful, inspiring tones. The TRD one just makes a drone when on the highway.

I built my exhaust system around a Black Widow Venom 250 muffler. You dont need to get a bolt on catback exhaust, isnt worth the money. Purchase the muffler that you actually want to hear and have a muffler shop weld it to the factory hanger and pipe run.

As most people will say, your truck will not sound like a V8 tundra, sorry to tell you that. But you can get a sound that you enjoy. I have an AFE CAI along with my exhaust and I love the sound. Only a mild drone around 30mph but it isnt terrible since Im not driving at the speed all the time. At 35mph it instantly goes away. The rest of the exhaust note sounds great. It doesnt sound like any other Taco that I have heard on the road or at meet-ups.

    Edit:
Be sure to clean you MAF sensor with some MAF cleaner. Leave the battery disconnected for about 2hrs to give your ECU a chance to reset to its Air/fuel ratios. This will help your idle and also get an efficient fuel burn which will also help improve your exhaust note. I just did this to my truck and there is a definite difference.
