Hey, look, it's the same reason people put on the TRD Pro grills. They cost a lot but don't increase the cooling or add any benefit. It's just for looks... I, myself, like function over form. But to each their own.

People use to offroad all the time before crawl control, it is not a necessity to have. Like a Rubicon owner asking why wheel in a base wrangler? Because they are 4X4 and can still handle a lot more then you think especially coupled with a skilled driver. I got the OR because I like to hit the trails and I am not a fan of non functional items IE hood scoops and color matched. I really like the matte items on the OR to boot.

I got an OR because I didnt want the scoop or color match. I don't need the locker or crawl, and will probably never use it. My buddy has a Sport because of the color match. Different strokes.

In my neck-of-the-woods you see more TRD ORs than you do Sports, although the dealership has several of each in different variations. I considered the Sport, though, didn't really think I needed the crawl control stuff, but ended up getting the OR when they offered me a better deal on one with a long bed (actually it's a standard bed) and the premium sound system. I didn't care all that much about the sound, but if it doesn't cost me much, why not?

One of the things that actually bugged me about the Sport was that it had a non-functional hood scoop. I don't really care for non-functional stuff, in principle. No knock on anyone who made that choice, though, cosmetics is a purpose in and of itself.

I think OP definitely missed the "appearance" factor why people lift their truck among others.

see the first two sentences in the OP.

I'm not trying to stir any pot, make fun of anyone, or anything of that nature.
    I was just curious.
The only thing I could come up with was the color matched parts, which seems to be alot of the reason.

I have a sport, but I'm most likely not going to lift it and never really romp it off-road. If I really wanted a off-road toy, I'd buy a used wrangler or a kit, not a $30000 truck. Sport, because the dealer had a MT 4 door siting on their lot. and wait for it....................................... SKEWP!!! Sorry couldn't resist

Because the Sport brings the element of sex.

Seriously though, I use 4x4 to get me through snow, sand, and on light trails. I've never once needed a locker. To me, the sport looks better at least on the 2nd gen.

Because ARB's can be engaged in 2wd or 4hi, and I don't want or need my truck to drive for me offroad. Also, hood scoops and painted flares are cool.
Then just to make sure I make everyone mad, I got rid of the Sport badging with custom TRD stickers on my drop bracket lifted truck.

It feels good to know that I'm apparently one of the 10% of people who wheel my third gen TRD OR and of that, one of the 1% of people ever in the whole world who has actually gotten stuck in such a way that having a locker got me unstuck.

Sport because it has the features i wanted, and not much i didnt. Also hate the look of matte plastic and like the look of the hood scoop and wheels. And wanted a black manual access cab. And manuals dont come with crawl. And stock e locker isnt that great anyways, ill add lockers with gears down the road, havent needed them yet.

Better trending questions.... and i do mean to offend:

Why are offroad people so convinced you need an offroad to offroad? Third pedal will do more for you than crawl will. Seen and done stuff with trd sports would make any taco owner cringe.

Why dont sports get offended seeing an offroad on the road? Idc what anyone here says, at most people spend 10% of their miles offroad. That means 90% are traveled on road. Why buy a vehicle for the exception? I did a roadtrip woth 11 people this year. I have no intention of buying a school bus for my next vehicle.

Why is every offroad ive seen both cleaner and showing less trail damage than my sport? Dont even get me started on the pro's... id love to catch a view of one in its natural habitat but i hear thats more difficult than finding a black panther and a snow leopard in the wild. Together.

You can off-road in a Mustang if you want.

The point is for almost the exact same money that buys you a Sport 4x4 (with a fake hood scoop and color matched bumpers and mirrors), you could buy the Off Road 4x4 with its locking differential, hydraulic brake booster, A-TRAC, MTS, CRAWL, etc. that actually improve the traction and ability to go anywhere without expensive, non-Toyota, add-ons.

Bang for the buck, I say!

I wanted four essential features: double cab, 4wd, tow package, and silver color. Other than that I didn't care about sport/off-road/sr5 - I didn't really care one way or another about the scoop or crawl control. I do get into snow and ice during the winter and haul things in the bed and a trailer on occasion. Overall it had the features I needed and has been a great truck for me.

Atrac mts and crawl are only on autos, hydraulic booster may or may not be an advantage, see tons of complaints about the brake booster feel. And every day i see a thread about e locker not engaging. I like tech and a good looking truck. To me matte plastic is associated with lower end vehicles and the look of the sport is valuable. If you disagree checkout the hood swap thread. Or color match bumper thread. Shoot checkout the marketplace for all those sweet ass stock bilsteins. I use my qi charger every day multiple times a day. Can you say the same about the locker? I see next to no value in the locker for my needs, but i guess thats why there are options.

Old school car sales saying that couldnt be more true: theres an ass for every seat and a seat for every ass

I can add some insight here. The OR marketed trucks in all categories appeal to people who are trying to get into offroading but don't want to hassle with tweaking their trucks to get there. Some of those folks don't realize that they can off-road just fine in a sport or sr5. Others don't like the sport for some reason or another. Some of them find the OR at a better price, or more in line with the options they want.

I can't speak for others but I can list the reasons I chose my truck for you, in no particular order

    1) I had already waited 7 months for a manual to show up locally in the color and option package I wanted

    2) I hate that the hood scoop on sports is fake. That's tacky as hell if it's non-functional (personal opinion)

    3) I hate that the hood scoop reflects sun in my face and impedes my view slightly

    4) I preferred the bigger tires on the OR

    5) I paid 3k less for my off-road than any sport I had seen in the area

    6) I was interested in getting into offroading and it was a ready to go gateway truck for me- I may have cared more about pinstriping the shit out of a sport or filling everything with mud I'll never get out like I have my OR

I've seen and wheeled with very capable sports and don't think any more or less of their owners for buying sports. But that model isn't for everyone's tastes, that's really what it comes down to. I'm sure there's alot of guys that buy the OR for the image thing too, but the sport isn't devoid of that. I probably see as many block lifted bro force one Sports as you see surgically clean offroads. There's alot of factors that go into what truck we all choose.

Bottom line though is really- who the fuck cares? You happy with your truck? Awesome, I'm happy for you. I love my truck, awesome be happy for me. We all like Tacomas. Idgaf which one you drive.
