Back in 06 i bought mine for 24.5k and the original price was 27. There was a local discount going on at the time if you bought a Texas Edition you get 1500 off the sticker price. Do some shopping around on Edmunds and dont you dare pay way over invoice. Also when your shopping for a vehicle dont ever talk about payments to the car guy unless your financing through the dealer. Stick with purchase price negotiations instead.

I'm telling you that its easier to negotiate a price than a payment. As soon as you bring up payments they will start screwing with your numbers too much. Just because you buy from a dealer doesnt mean you have to finance through them. Go to your bank and get a pre approval letter and shop with that.

For example, if your pre approved for 25k that means that your final out the door price must be at or below 25k to buy the vehicle through your bank. Is this your first vehicle purchase?

Don't know if it's easier but it's much better. I want to know exactly what I'm going to pay. Don't care if my payment is $300 a month and spread out over eternity. They will always get your payment to what you want it at. Then when you pay 1/2 again for the truck or you try to sell or trade and your bassakwards in the deal you will realize how dumb a move that was. I see people do it all the time and I slap my forehead everytime.

Here's how to deal with them. I've done this my last 4 vehicle purchases. Find the vehicle you want, write a check for what you want to pay for it, and walk in and hand it to them. (Go to your bank if you've got to finance get them to fill the check out for you and leave the name blank...they don't care who's its to just that you need it...if you have a good relationship, good reserves, good credit they will give you a blank one) Out of 4 times I've only had one dealer say no and I went 30mins down the road to the next one and got the exact same vehicle(sticker was $50 different) and they took it. I just bought a 09 tacoma at the end of June. I went to look at a different truck and wasn't planning on getting the one I did. Started dealing on the one I got and they got pretty close to where I wanted to be. I went outside, thought about what I wanted to do, pulled my check book out, wrote my check out, took it back in and thought the guy was going to rip the check as he snatched it from my hand. I wrote it for $1100 less than what their final offer was. Everytime I've done this I've walked out with a smile. I felt great about the deal I got. If they had said no then I would have went to the next guy. 1st two times I did it I was in the dealership barely over an hour. I had picked the truck and 4runner out a few days before while window shopping. Did my research and went in and did the deal. They may be a little hesitant but most of the time they will jump on it. It's how I'll do it for now on.
    Just a suggestion...my .02.

Well you got to be reasonable. Do your research, maybe go work some numbers to see where their at, and then go in with your check.

Well I agree with you...Don't know that they are worth that much really. I remember buying my 1st truck on my own back in 1999 a few months after graduating college. Got a 99 GMC ext cab Z71 4x4 SLE. Paid $23,000 otd. Same truck today will cost you $35-38,000. Absolutely ridiculous. Heck the inside of the 2010's look cheaper on the inside than my 99 did. A regular cab z71 4x4 SLE will cost you $30K now. My dad has the sticker off his '88 GMC 4x4 that says $11K on it. Had everything you could get on one back then. And these car dealers/builders wonder why they are going out of business.
    Sorry for derailing the thread...

Go 4x4 whats the point of a truck without it? My 2 cents. Mine was the rugged edition 2008 got it in 07 sticker was 33 got it for 25 with 5.06% for 60 months. There were no special deals when the economy was good.

My advice would be to ask the dealer to see the invoice for the truck and negotiate from there. The invoice on a 30k truck will be at least 27k. I think someone said 2.9% for 60 months is available; it that's true it a better value than the $1,000 rebate. If the dealer shows you the invoice, notice the date. If its an older vehicle (90 days or more), the dealer is more likely to discount the price of the truck.

Not a bad idea, except that the invoice price isn't the cost to the dealer. What you should really try to do is determine what the vehicle cost the dealer to get on their lot and configured, and then work from there to find a fair price.

This is a good point. You'll need to back out hold back and the finance credit. If I remember correctly each is 3% of the pre-delivery invoice cost on a Toyota.

    Roughly, yeah.

It's also a good idea to find out dealer cost on the packages and accessories you want. Then you can go in there knowing (within a few hundred dollars margin of error) exactly what it cost for them to put the truck on their lot.

Add 3% to 7% (depending on how generous you're willing to be), and you have your fair-profit selling price. Don't pay anything above this number. If the dealer won't come down, someone else will. Remember, it's always easier to find someone wanting to sell a car than someone wanting to buy one.
