Assuming that is a Schlage L series here is the tech specs , your configuration would appear to be a 9010

Passage latch trim is on page 23

It does show a locking mechanism for that model on page 56

As I said I don't have a lot of experience with mortise locksets but maybe that can help you out

Man I was hoping to find the outcome at the end of this page. Well I guess I know a bit more about locks. And I don't why but I downloaded the pdf of the lock just to look at it.

Crusher 2 is right. The finished plate is holding back the latch. If you use a philips screwdriver to remove the brass finish plate, the latch will be free.

Humor us and remove the plate. ;)

The building my office is in has those exact locks--just a different lever style and finish color. I have seen the trim plate loosen up and shift and catch the latch on a few of them. I'll bet everyone who mentioned that is correct. There's not actually a function to make it do that. Generally it happens on the passage locksets for some reason, never seen any of the keyed ones do that.

FWIW, mortise locks are much more expensive than cylindrical locks, but they're more often used in commercial buildings because they hold up better.

We manage a bunch of government contractor buildings. When they move out there are all kinds of locks on the doors. We had one we were demolishing the interior space and the Fire Captain from across the street came over and asked if he could do a forced entry training exercise. They had lots of fun, Axes, Sawzalls, Halligan Tools, and even this cool little hydraulic jack that wedged in between the door and jamb and just popped the door open. Must have been 50-60 splintered doors when they were done. They videoed it and still use it as a training film.

Have you tried pushing the handle up instead of down? If i recall there was a trick to a door handle like this where u open the door and pull down one side to hold the lock back then u pull up on the other handle to engage it to stay back. It was the same or reverse to release it. Just tryn f'n with both handles and see if it disengages.

    Awsome thread, very entertaining....

But what kind of truck owner does not keep at least a few common tools in it?? :D

J/K, could have been carpool day. Or maybe they come unglued abouit regulations if you bring personal tools in like my office does.

    :D:D
