This happened in my old house when I was little.

Something got fucked up inside the door handle so the inside handle would not open the door. That door didn't even have a lock. Of course this happens first thing in the morning during the summer when I'm home alone. This was before I had a cell phone and I had no phone in my room.

I spent 9ish hours stuck in my room waiting for my parents to get home to let me free :(

Makes it harder to slip the lock with a card.
Commercial locks are a little more complicated than household ones. We had a painter put a bunch back on not lined up right. Have to be able to open the door to take them back apart. Luckily we hadn't set the set screws in the hinges.

WD 40 and wipe any gunk out of the door. And the handles come off with either a set screw or stiff wire push pin type tool.

I was going to make a Perfect Strangers reference, but I'm not sure who all would remember.

On a keyed lock like the ones we have you'll have another piece of the latch as well:

This contacts a solid part of the strike which leaves it pressed in thereby making it impossible to push in the rest of the latch by hand (or with a credit card, etc.). The key or lever must operate it.
