DEI (directed electronics inc, the same people that make Viper alarm and remote start systems)makes an aftermarket system that automatically turn the lights on for you when it gets dark. I don't know what the product or install would cost. I have never done one but I know that they exist. Other than that I have an 07 and if you leave the lights on all the time they turn off when you turn the truck off and open the door. You might be buying more lights that way though. I am pretty sure it was designed that way to save your battery not to prevent you from getting pulled over lol.

Ya, 2nd gen is a pain in the ass until you get used to it, and a double-pain if you come into it from a vehicle like a Silverado that has automatic headlights.

The center panel lights come on with the headlights, but the cluster lights are on any time the ignition is on.
The only obvious indication that the headlights are on is a green light bulb icon below the tach.

I was told by my driving instructor that it was illegal to drive with only your parking lights because it looked like your headlights were on when you looked at the dash.

So now Toyota gives us a dash that's on at all times, and DRLs that look like parking lights.

this is what i do, plus it makes you more visible during the day...so you have to replace the headlight bulb sooner than others, 2 bucks versus the ticket seems to be cheap

Larger bulbs will blow the fuse.
Larger fuse and larger bulbs will burn the harness.
Even the stock bulbs have been known to melt the housing lenses.
OP is barking up the wrong tree.
