I installed an OME suspension setup last week and my front diff/drive shaft has sprung a leak.. Any one know how difficult this is to repair? The lift obviously cost me a chunk of change. And to make it even worse I am suppose to drive cross country on wednesday to visit my girlfriends family in omaha.

I attached a couple photos of the area that is leaking. Not sure how bad it is, but I have a small puddle of gear oil on my garage floor.. about the size of a cookie. mmmmm.

Thanks for the help guys, I am sick over this.

Same process on the front. Just be sure to tighten nut back exactly or slightly farther than before as the bearings need a certain preload.

Are you sure it's not coming from the axle vents right above that area. Those are known to blow out some gear oil sometimes especially if the front diff is a little overfilled. The driveshaft does not spin in 2wd so if that yoke seal is leaking it should only leak like that in 4wd I'm betting it's the vents and if that's the case check the fluid level and don't worry about it.

I will double check that, but I replaced the diff fluid about a year ago and it has not had any "blow out" until now if that is the case... Could the new OME 2" lift cause the front diff oil level to fluxuate? I just installed that about a week ago...

Lift shouldn't have had anything to do with it

I was gonna say it doesn't look like any fluid is sprayed out over everything. looks like it's dripping down from the trans side

I think it is the differential vents... I just checked and there is oil running down the vent tubes and into that area.. I have no idea why it is all of a sudden blowing oil out the breather tubes when I changed the oil a year ago? The only change is the small lift and new tires... I hope this is not a sign of a larger problem within the differential.. However, the fluid on my garage floor still looks brand new if thats any reassurance..

I'm going to clean up the breather tubes and and check the diff fluid level.

Mine has done it twice both times it was very cold and was running with the front axle locked and shifting in and out of 4wd on snow covered hwy's at higher speeds. Diff was still full when I checked both times and in fact ran out of the fill hole. Think the spec is the oil to be a certain distance below the fill hole. When I change mine I always fill it until it comes out so that might be some of the cause of it. It's definitely nothing to worry about and nothing wrong with the diff just makes a mess until you drive through some rain for a while and it all cleans up.

Thanks for your replies man, I would have probably run it into the dealer first thing in the morning because I dont have time to look at it myself before we leave on our trip. Im sure they would have blindly replaced something $$$$

Prepared for the dogpile on my question here. '03 SR5 TRD 4x4 V6 5sp man. 298K mi., driver side diff just started leaking two days ago, significant fluid loss. I do some mild four wheeling about twice a year, last time was 2 months ago, all worked fine.

I'm it's not just the seal, rather the bearing has failed as well.

Question: Can I drive in 2WD without causing further damage to the front diff?
