I put on the new tires last Saturday and when they pulled off my tires they showed me that my cv boot was tore and the grease was all pouring out. I took the truck to my dealer today and they said the boot tore because of the angle of the 5100s put on the cv joint? Does this make sense? They are telling me that the boot and labor Is not under warranty and before replacing it that they want to install a Toytec front differential drop kit. First off I am not a mechanic. Does this make sense or is this just a ploy to not warranty the boot? Should I fight them on the warranty? Should I still have them install the drop kit. They are telling me that the cv boot and the differential drop will cost me $375. It's a new truck and don't want to have problems in the future. Please help!!

You can wear through a boot with too much CV angle, but there are plenty of people here running 5100's that have not tore a boot yet. Diff drop won't do much, just added cost and labor to bill you. If youre handy and got tools, a OEM boot kit from Toyota was $45 bucks when I last did one. If you know someone who's done it before, it'll cut the time down in half, and save a lot of money.

A 2016 with a badly torn boot? Seems odd, but I can totally understand why they won't warranty it since it is lifted and the cv angles have been changed.

A diff drop will definitely improve the cv angles, although it seems like yours ripped prematurely even for being lifted. Has anything else been worked on? How long has the lift been installed? If I had to guess I'd say it was pinched by the installer of the lift.

I noticed the grease within 2 days of the lift but didn't think much of it until the tires we're put on and they showed me the torn boot. The lift has been on 2 weeks as of today. They dealer told me the bill stein 5100 at 1.75" lift creates too much of an angle and tore the boot and may cause other premature wear issues. Should I have them put on the differential drop and fight them about paying for the boot and the labor for the cv boot? I just want my new truck fixed and not have to worry about it failing again. I wish Headstrong would have told me when I called them about potentially having an issue like this. I love the look but regret putting on the Billstein 5100 and the deaver AAL.

My guess is whoever installed the lift, tore the boot putting the bottom shock mount in place.

It's not their fault; they sell parts and service. Reality and research is on the owner.

Modding comes at a risk, and if you don't want increased wear or complications - don't do it.

Something you'd have understood if you did far more reading and self educating than you did.

Sounds like you'd be better off taking the new parts off, paying for the boot repair and leaving it alone.

No chance you burnt up an OEM boot in 2 weeks because of angles, with less than 2" of lift especially.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Headstrong did not warn you because your boot did not fail due to wear. You should be telling whoever installed your lift they need to repair it because they tore it. Just get the CV replaced and enjoy your truck. You will not continue to tear boots. It was an install error. I run the dif drop but went a year before I did and I have 2.75 inches of lift up front. Never have my CV had a problem.

    Let's see an angle pic.

Then you can go back to the dealer and tell them the forums experts said you're full of poo

Doesn't really make a difference what their reason is for denial of warranty, that's just the one they picked.

OPs paying for this one. If he hadn't waited so long, he had a good case for the lift installer to be responsible for the damage, being that he saw the grease "within 2 days" of the lift being installed, but he ignored it.

    Break out your wallet.

There's a law that states the dealer needs to provide proof that aftermarket parts directly caused the defective part. Basically, they need to show that the boots are rubbing severe enough at the 1.75" setting to tear a boot. Without pics I'm just guessing, but I would be surprised if they are touching at all.

That doesn't apply at a dealer service counter. They said it was from CV angles. If he wants to pull out the MMA card, he needs to sue them to do so. ;)

Step 1. Buy OEM boot kit, $50.

Step 2. Install OEM boot kit, perform boot slide mod on both sides.

Step 3. Don't let morons work on your truck. It sounds like they put a hole in your boot during install, no way 5100s put your stock boots at that much of an angle to destroy them within a week or two. Inspect the other side for wear marks...

Step 4. Clean up the grease that is everywhere.
