Help needed with pre collision system

Hey everyone! I need some help and advise please.

I just picked up a 2018 off-road with the technology package last week. As part of the deal I negotiated a pro grille and TSS garnish. I had around 200 miles on the truck at the time that they installed the grille. They gave me a 2018 Tacoma as a loaner for the day while they installed my grille. (They said they had to install it since it was part of the original deal). Adpative cruise control, lane departure, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors all work fine. When I drove the loaner Tacoma I was coming up quick to an intersection and someone cut in from of me and I got a "BRAKE!" on my display and an audible warning.... Which got me thinking my truck has never done that. I've tried all day today with every sensitivity changed and turned the PCS on/off to try and get it to function. Also, there are no dash lights on at all.


Any ideas? What sensor controls the PCS?... The sensor on the front or the camera in the windsheild? Just not sure what to do... The thought of taking it to the dealer and then driving it around town trying to crash it to test the function makes me sick a little bit. Truck currently has 800 miles on it.

If the adaptive cruise works you are likely fine. It uses the same radar sensor as the pcs system.

 

I wouldn’t be concerned if the rest of the functions are working properly.. that “Brake!” warning has only come on for me when I truly was coming in on a car that cut me off at a good clip. I’m not saying you should test it more extensively.. but if your radar cruise control works just drive the car. Really not much they can mess up installing the grill and garnish, pretty plug and play.

 

My wife's Rav4 has the same setup and when I was reading about it in the manual, it stated that it will only intervene at the absolute last moment. Without setting up some sort of test barrier to resemble a vehicle, I'm not sure you can test it safely.

 

I figured that which is why I was confused. Since the other one kicked in the first time I drove it i was concerned. I'm confident I could crash or hit a pedestrian without it helping.

 

I don't really care if it says "brake" but the pedestrian monitoring was something that I really liked having two year old twins. Just would like all my stuff to work that I paid for but I would think it would be throwing a code or something. With everything else working it's confusing.

 

That's why I was concerned on what the dealership would even do. I've came up on people fairly quickly with it on the highest sensitivity and nothing...

 

You’ll shit your britches the first time you find out how quickly it can stop the truck.

 

I recommend asking your least favorite neighbor, friend or in-law to walk near the front of your truck while driving slowly and you should get the pedestrian warning beep. If you don’t may want to have the dealer take a look.

 

Haha I know the loaner I drove it scared the crap out of me when it engaged when the person pulled out in front of me. Today is was so close there is no reason why it shouldn't have engaged.

 

Haha may have to do that. It slows pretty dramatically when the cruise control is on and someone comes in my lane but I've yet to have the acutual collision prevention.

 

Alright guys.... update. Today I got bored and a buddy had a life size cutout of Michael Jackson that he got at a Halloween party. We set it up in the parking lot and I went around 15 miles an hour towards it.... never checked up.... ran it completely over. Even with the sensitivity turned all the way up. Am I missing something?

 

Maybe your truck doesn’t like Michael Jackson, try a different genre?

No really, I wonder if the sensor can’t do cardbord. Try wrapping the target with foil? Just a guess though, there may be more to it happening there...

 

I thought it was supposed to monitor for pedestrians?

 

Update # 2.... just tried it with foil. No difference. Ran it completely over lol.

 

My guess is they fubared something with the grill install. If not, it may have not been right from the get-go.

There has to be a testing protocol via one of the ECU units. The shop can't validate function by 'road testing' on something like this, too much liability.

Take it back and have them fix/adjust it.

Now if they go out back and set up a life size cardboard of a person...........

 

I've got rear cross traffic on my Prius - has scared the sh*t out of me twice.

Once when my wife walked behind the car as I was backing up and again when I reversed the first time with my bike rack on.

Both times it stopped the car dead in it's tracks!

Love the radar cruise control though - will come to a stop and accelerate again in stop and go traffic.

 

Good test, definitely a issue. The foil would have been picked up by the sensor.

Next time you test it with a cutout, use this one - your truck will respect it

I thought our trucks wouldn't use the radar for stop and go traffic? Am I wrong?
