so i just bought my first tacoma 99 SR5 with 2.7L 4cyl 4x4. i bought it knowing it had a miss and cracked exhaust manifold. After doing compression test and leakdown test I found a leaking valve on the exhaust. So I pulled the head and sure enough I have a burnt valve on Cyl2.

I just sent the head out to check for cracks, new valves, and plain the surface.

Here is where im a little stuck as I do not have a service manual for the truck.

When its time to put it back together do I have to take the front cover of the block off?(to set timing chain) I am not changing the chains because im not pulling the front diff to do it as I need the truck up and running asap.

I have done a hand full of timing belts on cars but its the one thing I lack in experience and tend to "get scared" so im just looking for any help/pointers to make things less pain less.

I know it should be pretty easy as the head was one of the nicest ones i have ever done! everything was so easy to get to and work with!

    Thanks in advance everyone!

The chain has 3 brass colored links that show you exactly where everything is supposed to line up. One for the crank sprocket, and 2 for the camshaft sprockets. The only way you can be 100% sure that you get the engine timed right, and the chain timed right, is to remove the cover. While you CAN lower the oil pan enough to access the oil pickup nuts and bolt, it takes little time to actually drop the diff far enough to access it properly. I would not take ANY chance in timing it correctly, and you will have to pull the cover to be sure. While you might get lucky, you don't want to risk damaging valves and/or pistons if you miss align the timing chain. If you need some detailed help, feel free. I have done several of these chains.

thanks for the info, i just went out and started tearing it down, there was about 12-13 nuts/bolts holding the cover on, i took them out but the cover still wont come off? its loose and i can move it a bit but feels like there is still a bolt holding it somewhere? is there a bolt under the oil pain that i have to get to?

The reason the front cover wouldn't come off, is as I had mentioned, there are 2 nuts and a bolt holding the pickup tube to the timing cover. The only way to fully remove the oil pan however is to pull the front diff, or pull the engine. No ways around it, sorry.

im lost.. ive replaced the head gasket, got it reassembled but don't start. it will only click "over" once although it did turn over a lot once... I had not realigned the mark I made to match the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain so I when back and lined up my homemade marks but s still nothing... thoughts please??

Could you elaborate a little more on what you have going on right now? I don't really understand the last post. Does it turn over normally? Battery charged up? Did you verify the timing marks?
