LATCH is good, but for the forward facing toddle seat, it's a pain in the butt to install the upper harness strap on the taco as you'll need to hook it up, then lock the seat in place, then try to tighten it. Undoing it is more of a PITA..

Hang up, man, California law is changing, and you should plan ahead.

Good seats are expensive, so you want it to last, and be easy to use an versatile. For example, the Chicco Keyfit 30 (30 means 30 lb capacity) will latch into a special convenience stroller they make, which means if the kid is sleeping, you don't need to disturb them to transfer into the stroller. Plus it is just a lot easier. Bob strollers also come with a variety of adapters for several brands of seats. Don't just think seat. Think system. The Chicco is so well designed, I would buy another without reservation. For example, the bottom is curved, so you can rock them in it. If you need to stabilize it, just rotate the handle down to the floor.

New standards "requires children younger than 2 to sit in a rear-facing child-safety seat while traveling in a vehicle.
The bill, AB 53 by Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens), will not apply to children who weigh more than 40 pounds or are 40 inches or taller. The law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2017.

For reference, here is our Chicco in a 2015 DCLB. Importantly, note how close it is to the back of the front passenger seat. As someone else mentioned, this is a big issue with bulky rear-facing seats. Go test fit at Buy Buy Baby or similar stores.

I agree with the chicco seat recommendation. That is what we used with my son. Having one base in each car is very convenient. You just attach them once, and you can pull the baby chair in and out with basically one hand without disturbing the baby. Plus it attaches to the chicco strollers. When my wife got pregnant, we were looking at all the "fancy" car seats and strollers, and sort of turned our noses up at chicco, because thats what everyone had. But, they ended up being really convenient.

Started with a Graco with the base that stays in the truck. The found the Diono seats. Great seats, very pricey though. But that is the price of safety.

We have the Britax Be Safe Agile model and it's a very nice car seat but I will say it is heavier than a lot of them out there. Guess it means it will be safer in the event of a crash or something though.
OP..If you haven't purchased one yet. they make a car seat with a triangular handle to hold. My opinion...get one like that! It's so akward holding a car seat with a straight handle. Holding the triangular handle makes it much easier.

Watch your local retailers for trade in sales. Ours does one a couple times a year and gives a 20% discount on a new purchase with a trade in. Seeing that and calling to confirm what did and didn't qualify, I then went out and found a used seat cheap at a yard sale - that was obviously unsafe - and used it as my trade in. Saved money and took an unsafe piece of garbage off the market.

If you are ever in doubt about your seat being properly fitted, stop in at your local law enforcement and fire stations. There seems to always be at least one person at those places that is trained to properly identify and install child seats and I've always found them to be grateful that we took the time to be certain.

Bull bar, but more to come
id go with a travel system. Our car seat clicks into the car AND the stroller. Graco aire 4. Black and red just like the taco;) plus the whole system can up-convert as your child grows, up to decent size.

I am a CPS Tech, and we have the KeyFit 30. the best seat for you, is the one that you will install right and will fit well in your truck. That said, the KeyFit 30 fits the bill on both accounts. Easy to install and fits in the taco (DC)

OP, the only reason I would buy new tires instead would be if your current ones are unsafe.

We have the Britax b safe as well along with the BOB stroller adapter witch is amazing for the day trips. The seat is heavy and bulky but it is one of the safest out there. My 3 yr just upgraded into a new Recaro which very nice as well but forward facing.

My 9 month old rides in a graco quick connect 35. same deal bases in each car. She is now weighing in at 25 pounds and her feet are sticking out of it pretty good. So based off of @TacoRph recommendation and write up I just ordered the diona radian rxt.

My priority is the ability to get the child in and out of the seat easily and into the ergobaby or my shoulders, so the infant seat was only good for a year or so.

So, so much easier than a giant stroller. Other folks have different priorities. ;)

By the time the kiddo's legs touch the back of the chair, they should face forward.

Thanks for this recommendation. We'll be in the market for a bigger seat (and convertible) for him to meet the new California law, which will go into effect when he is 1 1/2. New law is 2 yo or less than 40 lb must be rear facing. This would be a good long-term move.

@texanhoyt and @scocar, you guys are very welcome. I've gotten lots of ideas, and help from being a member of TW, so if I can give something back then I'm more than happy to do so. I hope y'all have good luck with those Diono's!

The baby stuff is just so overwhelming with options, plus related usability issues that are too difficult to foresee by yourself if it is your first time. Way harder than trying to figure out a lift.

There is a really good carseat review site that I will post a link to later when I have a chance.

The Woman just mentioned that I need to start researching this stuff.... I have no idea what to do, where to begin, or even what to think about first...

All I know is that it's probably going to cost me a lot of time and money... and that without a doubt there will be only 1 - no more!!!

The whole car seat system for varying size with integration with a stroller has me intrigued... I assume I need to get on this stuff asap so any guidance would be appreciated...
