Need help fixing my ac/heater that does not blow out any air through the center vents or out the windshield area. The side vents and the feet blow strong. The light behind the blower speed knob also does not illuminate. I just bought a new climate control box and installed it, but it did not fix the problem. That is, the light behind the blower knob still does not illuminate and, the center and windshield vents do not blow air when the blend selector knob on the right end is adjusted (see photo).

    • Is there a servo that controls the direction of air flow that may be defective?
    • Is the direction of air flow controlled by a vacuum line from under the hood?

I read the instructions and it sounds helpful.
    Thanks.

Bump, I have this same issue exactly. I have read the posts where people replace the air mix control servovalve/ actuator thing, went down to the wrecker and bought 2. I have learned that this is not the problem. It works fine, whatever controls the airflow is giving me my problem.

I read a post about foam being stuck in the defrost vents but that isn't the case either. It only blows out of side vents and floor.

Where is the unit that controls direction of airflow? A flap or valve or? If i know where it was i'd take it out and lube it up.

Same problem here. My airflow on HVAC is stuck in defrost. Will not blow anywhere else. Everything else works fine heat/cool mix selector, ac on off, etc..

When I got my truck a year and a half ago, the air knobs were no-ops, AC
came out of (the middle?) vent, and turning the knob didn't change where
the air came out at all, no air on the windshield... it was the beginning of
summer, I don't remember now if I could make ac change to heat or not.

Anywho... I ended up needing a new "Heater Box" (87150-04060) which required
removing the dashboard... hope that'$ not your problem... when winter got here,
though, I was glad I could turn on the defrost!

Although not a Tacoma, my wife's Jeep JK had the same issue last year and my research found that it was the heater core, and my mechanic (who is the best in my opinion of course :) ) said, would you mind if I tried flushing the heater core to see if that fixes the problem instead of replacing? I said sure. He flushed it and found all kinds of crap in it and he said if she took the jeep to her dealer (she bought it new in 2013) then a lot of the time they drop one of the stop leak tabs in the radiator as a "precaution." Anyway, fixed the problem, all vents worked, heat and air worked great. Just a thought.
