I foolishly took my '22 to the dealership for the free oil change / tire rotation at 10,000, did it myself at 500 and 5000. Doing it today and the fucking filter is way over-tightened. I put a torque wrench on it and it clicked at 40 lbs. It feels like the plastic is about to give if I pull any harder. Anyone got any tricks? I already spent 2 hours on the phone bouncing from person to person with the fucking dealership.......

I would take the word help out of the title - this is usually reserved for emergency situations. Ie stuck on the trail or roadway.

if you have the correct size wrench, and have tried that, id try a strap wrench. That can grip the main housing.

Thanks. I didn't think of that. I tried to edit my title, but couldn't figure it out. It is sitting in my driveway with the oil and filter drained and i have to be on a construction site in 2.5 hours if that makes a difference.

Put the drain plug back in the filter housing, fill oil, and go. The old filter will be fine until you have time to deal with it.

After going to the dealership, I got mine off with a breaker bar.

I've heard of a lot of people breaking the plastic filter housing. The new ones are inexpensive. Put a breaker bar on it and be prepared to buy a new one if you crack it when pulling it off.

this is what I did with girlfriend's 4R, I wasn't real proud of it at the time, but I knew I'd really be up shit-creek if I broke the housing and had to park it to go get a new one. I also made the next oil and filter change early.

I'd fill it back with oil and take it to the dealer to fix it.

This happened with my fiancé's Prius, serviced by some Jiffy Lube-esque place before I met her.

It was so tight that no tool could get it off. I even shattered the oil filter housing tool that I purchased straight from Toyota. I had a 1/2" breaker bar on it, and it destroyed the tool at the connection to the breaker bar.

I ended up having to cut a chunk of the housing off with a Dremel, and then pounding the piss out of the thing with a chisel and hammer.

I was dumbfounded that one of these could be this tight. It's as if they put it on with a powerful impact or something.

Once I broke the housing free it came off fine. It was just getting that initial friction released.

If that hadn't worked I was going to remove the metal part of the system from the engine block itself, and just get a new one of those.

I do all of our oil changes now, and the filter housing goes on very gently nowadays.

Best of luck in your repairs.

I think of these housings like old school spin-on filters; they seem to tighten down (not sure if it's heat, heat cycles, pressure, etc) so hand tight and then regrip and snug it only an 1/8 or 1/4 turn. No tools to tighten at all, as it tightens itself on, will be way to tight.

I've got a good tool. I bought it in '11 for the wife's 4 Runner. I think it came from Doorman. I plan to tap it strategically, give it one more try with the breaker bar, then go buy a ratchet strap tool. Thanks. I've bought Tacomas and 4 Runner from 4 different dealers in the S.E. I bought this one from Tallahassee, Fl. I will never do business with them again.

Option A - put oil back in it, order a new filter wrench and housing, try again when you receive both. The wrench for better grip, the housing so that you aren't stranded if you completely fubar the works.

Option B - put oil back in it, take it to the dealer and put it on their dime if they fubar the housing.

I had the same issue OP, I kept applying pressure until it cracked. Still didn't come off. I had to take mine off in pieces.

I now have the aluminum one, and haven't had any issues.

i bought a spare filter cover, just in case. 18 ft lbs is the correct torque, mine bottoms out right at that.
i had the opposite when i did my first oil change. went to loosen the drain cap and the whole filter turned.

Order the aluminum oil filter housing and get that plastic junk off of it for starters and try doing it with the motor hot next time

Got it off! Did strategic taps for a few minutes. I used a torque wrench. It was over 60 lbs...... I was prepared to break it and buy an aluminum one. I'm amazed how much torque that thing just took..... I don't see any cracks! The little tab thing was +- 1/2" past the mark! Dumbass must have used an impact.... Thanks for the support. Also: Motor was hot.

One more for the motivx filter tool. My first oil change required a breaker bar. Torqued to spec from that change on and no issues since. 18 flbs for filter, 10 flbs for the filter plug.

    duuude. A firsthand story..
I worked at jiffy in high school during the summers, probly 2009-2011 timeframe. They buy these cheap off-brand oil filters, and I remember a specific smaller filter (fit certain import cars, i think) that never fit its prescribed model quite right. The fix was to intentionally WAY overtighten it so it didnt leak. I think 3 or 4 cars got blown bc of oil leaking out and seizing the engine. Not knocking folks who work at these places, but I will never ever ever take anything of mine to a quick change place, never.
