If he used hand tools and put over 60 ft. lb. of torque, he's a goddamn moron that should not be changing oil. I believe being a dumbass that used an impact wrench is more plausible and forgivable , (I'm told that new techs don't like hand tools by a buddy in the business). I drove it about 50 miles, let it cool about 30 min. What do you suggest?

Grab an impact and try to tight the cap. Report back what happens to it.

No, I try to avoid doing dumbass things. Seems like it would work, you would just have to be careful to not over tighten. Also seems like repeated use would be hard on the plastic. Am I missing something? Tell me what would happen.

No need, I can tell ya :anonymous:

The plastic tabs break off, leaving a hole in the filter housing, causing an oil leak. Some may even call it an oil spray if you crank it :crapstorm:

And for anyone assuming, no I didn't install mine with an impact. I took it off with an impact (because it was too tight for even a 1/2 breaker bar...). Replaced it with aluminum housing knowing it was gonna be toast once I gave it the beans.

i failed successfully. I broke a tab off my plastic one, but it didnt leak :anonymous: replaced it with an aluminum one the next oil change. Now i tighten the housing till it bottoms out, no tighter.

I’m seeing a lot of oil changes goofed up recently by oil change places getting them home with oil drips. Guess they don’t know how to do them. I change mine myself so no issues here.

On my '01 I use to pound a screw driver right through the side of the filter and get a long bar or pipe on it.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
This is the spot on filter cap where you should end up around with 18 lb-ft. Should be pretty much the same spot each time.

Too much drama. Wheels are torqued at 85.
FYI, it will give you a fight at the next oil change even after you torque to specs.

True story, mine was so stuck on that my ratchet extension twisted when i was wrenching on that housing.

i have one of those nice oil filter wrenches and eventually i decided my best option was to use my m18 impact.

buzzed it right off, same way the dealer put it on im sure….

Edit: more backstory, the center of my motivx tool got pretty wallowed out trying to wrench the housing loose. I also tried breaking it loose with a hammer and punch but from how it felt from tapping on it, i could tell they just slammed it on with an impact and only an impact was going to get it off

Why would you use the very 3/8'' center of the motivx wrench when you have it designed for use with a 15/16'' socket?

They make the tool for use with a 15/16'' socket for a reason. Try using it that way next time with a 1/2'' ratchet, or breaker bar.

Yeah well I’ll be using that now since i wore out the center but that was the first time the filter was seized. Doubt using the 15/16ths would have got the filter off, seems like it needed some impact either way

Yup, ^clownk is totally right! As for that place that changes oil in a jiffy, one of YOU GUYS left YOUR oil filter wrench on the oil filter of my 1st gen while trying to put my skid plate back on. First of all, YOU don’t need to use the wrench to put a new oil filter on, it’s supposed to be hand-tightened. Anyways, my skid plate wouldn’t fit on right because YOUR wrench fell off and got caught between the oil pan and skid plate, so YOUR GUY just rehung the skid plate by two partially tightened bolts and called it good. By the time I got home, one of the bolts almost fell off and the skid plate was dangling sideways with the oil filter wrench still on it.
I was so pissed about how they didn’t tell me about the skid plate that I felt like throwing their wrench through their front window. The manager didn’t do anything or even apologize when I went back to talk with him, he just said thanks. I also called their corporate office to complain and they pretty much just said thanks also.

I was an idiot for expecting more of idiots!

sorry OP- hope you got to work ok and are getting a replacement metal one for your next oil change, they are a very good replacement for a plastic liability part!
