I oil the ring, but not the threads. Why the threads?
From my experience, oil on the threads makes them tighter. Leupold recommends using oil on the screws when mounting their scope rings.

Probably not an impact, but I bet you $1,000 they spun the filter housing on with a cordless drill/driver.

The OEM reinforced nylon filter is more impact resistant than the die cast aluminum housing. It will survive an impact that would grenade the aluminum housing. The only real problem the nylon housing has is that many techs/owners are not as smart as the housing.

They don't magically tighten themselves further during heat cycles, if it's too tight some dumbass over tightened it. Period. The key to drama free oil changes is to note the stop flange on the housing. It's the slightly protuding step at the bottom of the threads. When that flange touches the engine...stop tightening the housing. If you tighten it any further the flange that was at 90° to the threads will distort and wedge itself deeper than it should. That's why Toyota gives such a low torque value, use a torque wrench and watch...as soon as the flange touches you'll be at the specified value. The OEM housing is nylon and it will over screw in very easily but that is a one-way wedge...it's going to be much harder to unlock that wedge.

That is the only saving grace of the aluminum housing, the stop flange won't distort nearly as easily. So if you're going to continue to have your oil changed by dealers/Jiffy lube/etc. Put the cheesey die cast aluminum housing on.

Society, on the whole, is not getting any smarter.

The Oring in the housing does the sealing. Cranking on the housing does nothing. Simple physics.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Never put oil on threads of something you're going to torque. Torque values are determined by the friction of dry threads. Oiling will increase the torque applied substantially.

You don't torque the canister. You stop when the cap touches the aluminum housing

    Disagree. It works fine
I use this setup to take off on 2107 tacoma and 2012 toyota for many years now.

18 ft lbs is what is called for however mine bottoms out before that so then i stop.

also when i did my first oil change i was going the remove the drain gizmo but the entire cap turned so i just loosened it until oil started coming out into a bucket. since then i have never used the drain gizmo.
