Hey all. I just saw an oil leak all over the bottom of my truck. I narrowed it down to a leak above my oil pan. Can anything tell me what this part is called and where the oil is leaking from? I added oil and got my truck up to temp and saw oil dripping down from the black part but I’m not sure what that is. Much appreciated in advance.

The black part is just a dust cover, the oil is likely leaking from the rear main crankshaft seal.

It requires the transmission to be removed so yes it can be depending on labor rates in your area, you should be able to remove that black plug and see the seal to verify it is indeed the seal leaking.

If that’s the case, the engine has to be separated from the transmission.
    Let’s hope it’s not for your sake:fingerscrossed:

I’m pretty sure you’re correct about the RMS. I saw the oil dripping out from the black plug

If everything is dry above the bellhousing then pretty much the only place it can be coming from is the RMS or upper oil pan gasket, seal is more common than the gasket.

That's exactly what my rear main seal leak looked like.

    OP I think you're hosed.

Get ready for a clutch job if manual.

If auto, well maybe do your converter seal while there.

I dropped my tranny out to do my clutch in my garage. No lift, just some jack stands and elbow grease. If you have to tools and time you can totally do it. This video is a step by step. Kflo is the man. It shows the clutch, flywheel, and rear main seal.

My truck is a 2011 Auto, but it's leaking pretty good. I'm going to have to pay someone to do it because I don't have the time or all the tools to get it done.

I discovered the RMS leaking on mine this morning, 20 days after the last oil change and 1500 miles over my 80K extended warranty. They said they would cover half the cost since I had no warranty claims during the 80K warranty. My half of the cost : $750.00. Does anyone know what the Toyota book time is on a RMS replacement job?

So I just replaced my rear main seal while I was swapping transmissions. I had the trans dropped and new one back in with 4 days of work by myself and I’m not mechanically that smart. It’s a lot of work but I did it in my driveway with a hydraulic handcart and basic hand tools. Cost $20 for the seal

Motor labor guide shows this for your '16, assuming 4WD and 3.5L V6 w/auto trans.

8.0 hours to R&I the transmission
    +0.5 hours for RMS

You know, if you ask for the estimate in writing, they should give you a copy that breaks down all of the charges including labor. If they won't itemize the estimate and will only provide a bottom-line $$ figure, you need to find another shop.

It’s confirmed RMS is leaking and will need to be done. Unfortunately, I don’t have the tools or time to do it myself. So time to pay the shop master.

Any idea what you might have done to blow that seal so prematurely? Did you do a lot of jackrabbit starts, landscape towing or use dollar store oil and filters? Really tough wrapping my head around the concept that you gotta get reemed out like this while others avoid the onus.

I found a reputable independent garage that did a great job. Quick turn around and they warranty their work 36k miles or 3 years if anything goes wrong with the RMS. I think the price was fair for the job. Plus they turned it around super quick

well I don’t think it blew prematurely. My truck has 227k miles. I change my oil consistently with good products, take care of my truck but use it as a truck.
