I have a JBL GT and the max is 1100 watts. I was thinking about the alpine 500 watt v type amp. Would that amp give the sub enough power to make it hit?

your best bet would be to get a JBL GT amp if they make one for that sub. i had 4 memphis pr 12's and 2 memphis pr amps. you get the best SQ with amps made specifically for a certian subwoofer

look for an amp that the RMS output matches the RMS power of the sub. Then make sure the amp has a bit more power MAX wise and your set.

No, you dont. Neither the sub, nor the amp, are people, have feelings, or in any way have any idea what they are hooked up to.

    Listen to this:
This is the safest way to pick out a sub amp. Then dont get crazy with the gain knob - IT IS NOT A VOLUME KNOB.

    Repeat it again:
IT IS NOT A VOLUME KNOB.

It is used to set the gains to match the output of the head unit sub output.

    Good luck!

ok so what your telling me is go pick a random ass POS amp up from walmart because it "says" 1200 rms. well they match so im gonna buy it.

they wouldnt make an amp that matches the sub if it wasnt meant for it.

IMO thats where yo will get the best SQ from. you CAN match it with a cheap amp, but its like putting plastic hubcaps on your truck, stupid

I think this pretty much covers this portion:

    Thanks Woody!

They made it to sell for a profit. Does not make it best, does not affect Essque, and generally makes no difference at all.

I also fail to see how purchasing an amplifier equates to running steel wheels with or without a wheel cover....

What I said was, pick an amp with a similar or matching RMS power rating (at the given impedance that you will be running the sub) and learn how to use a gain knob, cause it is not a volume knob.

And for the record, just because Walmart is selling it does not make it a piece of junk. A quick look on my phone shows they carry Infinity Reference series amps, as well as the Pioneer FD 4 channel and class D amps, which would be great.

From this statement you have no IDEA what RMS is, a decent amp that puts out 750watss RMS is around $500. Most amps that walmart sells are amps that say their 1200wats PEAK, not RMS. Most are only 200-350RMS. RMS is the running output under normal load that it puts out. Thats why subs say the RMS is say..500, but PEAK is 1000. Power required to operate is 500RMS but it can handle up to 1000watts PEAK before damage. I have a kicker true power amp, a zx750.1 The RMS output is 750 watts, but it can put out PEAK a max of over 1000watts.

i know exactly what RMS is rob, and i know the difference between RMS and peak power

im giving my opinion because thats what the OP is asking for
