I have a 2007 Tacoma 4X4 V6 auto with a locked engine. I can buy a used one from the local junk yard... But from what I could find online you have to remove the trans first then the engine? Is this really true? I have never had to do that on any other vehicle I have swapped out engines on...Why doe sthis have to happen? Anybody know? Seems like alot of time and effort to removew the trans/ trans case if I do not have to... Any help, suggestions? has anybody doen a R and R on a newer truck?

Light bar and bumper guard, 3/16 steel skid plates for engine, tranny and transfer box, OME 881 springs with 5100 shocks at mid clip. AAL in rear. Positraction rear diff.
The Chilton manual for 05-09 Tacoma says remove transmission first.

FSM says to remove the trasmission first as well.

That being said, I pulled my motor not long ago. I have a first gen, but toyota is not very original and recycles designs. I dropped the transmission/transfer case first as the FSM called to do so. In hindsight, I'm fairly confident I could have pulled it without dropping the transmission. HOWEVER, I don't think I could have got it back in with the transmission still mounted.

    I'm guessing hydrolock

They mean remove. As in drop the fucker to the ground.

Like I said, wiggling the engine out without removing transmission, me thinks it's possible. Wiggling it back in with the tranny still there...not so sure.

why don't you let us know how the job goes? I suspect you can get the mill out with the tranny is place, but going back in might be a miserable experience.

My habit has always been to pull engine and tranny as a unit and to do as much build up as possible before going back in.

I think I will comply with recomendations to remove the trans. Probably less trouble in the long run.

I bought the truck locked up. I am trying to save myself a buck and get a truck I can not really afford...

Does anyone have a shop manual download I could look through just to make sure I am on the right track. I read the one on the South Carolina off road site for the FJ cruiser. I assume it is very similar if not the same...?

    thanks for your help!!

I will post as it happens. I orderd the engone today. A 41,000 mile complete engine for $2100 delivered.

If you have a lift the whole engine and transmission can be dropped from the bottom. I assume you dont have a lift and you are not experienced mechanic... SO your best option is to remove the transmission THEN remove the engine. In several cars the engine and transmission can be remove from the top together, BUT I don't know about Tacoma. It might be possible...

You can't lift the motor out with the transmission and transfer case attached on a tacoma. Not happening.

As for the Factory Service Manual, it's all available here:
