    Example of good sourcing.

Bolded words really stood out to me. Other stuff is questionable.
This is all my opinion, but being my thread I wanted to keep the posts reasonable.
Please don't :crapstorm: on this thread. I wish for posts only relevant to the flight to be posted.

My bad. On the phone and sometimes hard to post websites. Understand I'm an aviation buff myself and I do know my stuff. I'll be out though. See ya

I thought the thread had a healthy amount of self policing. Several people in this thread (even some I don't always agree with) clearly have some in-depth knowledge.

Some (several) of the stuff you call questionable (not bolded?) is 100% correct such as the RAT providing electric and hydrualic power (no need to detail how it does it from me) so that statement and some of the others are not questionable at all.

And Brady is a dude that is helping prototype the 767 re-fueling tanker. If you're looking for people with knowledge of aircraft, aircraft systems and operations I wouldn't think you'd want him to bail (or several others that have posted for that matter).

The OP posted a link to summon the help of the public and look for the plane via satellite images. I sense he dosen't want his thread to turn into a discussion/theory, but he would rather see facts from news reports posted on here.

... hearing news reports and posting them doesn't stimulate me so much. I like to hear theories and possibilities.

Where do you see that? Nobody is shitting on your thread. So far, it's a healthy discussion with posts of intelligence.

Threads that went south have name calling, mud slinging, politics- Obama did it... etc..... I don't see it here.

I worked on 777s for a couple of years and have been to the systems school.
There are people on here that don't have that background ... I was merely trying to provide info. There are some that are giving out bad info on here. I take issue with that... explain it correctly if you know, look it up if you are not sure. That's why they made aircraft manuals. I am very familiar with the 777

PM sent. Seeing the pic I'm guessing we know some of the same people. That said, I don't work for DAL.

I did see this on a tour once - they showed how nurses could change the cabin pressure if deemed necessary during medical transport. But I thought it was a range - up to 14,000 feet or something.

Separately heard of pilots raising the temperature on long-haul flights so that people were comfy and went to sleep.

And heard some stories in ground school about pilots who got fired for stuff, which makes me laugh at the idea of flight data recorders being pre-loaded with all the information. Yeah, that's not how they caught the air transport guys goofing off.

The Uighur separatist theory is intriguing:

    http://www.news.com.au/national/uig...ay-be-reexamined/story-fncynjr2-1226855911080

Americans are more familiar with Islamic terrorism aimed at punishing the U.S. for supporting Israel, invading Muslim countries, etc.

If you think about it, who would want to hijack a plane headed to Beijing to make a political statement? (One with hardly any Americans aboard, but lots of probably more wealthy/influential Chinese)

    Maybe these guys:

I think they are not counting a lot of airports where this plane could have landed... 7+ hours of flying from the turn west

While I doubt the 'nap of the earth' flying that some on tv are talking about ... With TCAS and the radar altimeter the pilot certainly could have flown low enough to avoid sleepy eyed air traffic controllers in India

The simulator setup the pilot had in his apartment (which I don't think is weird for anybody in aviation to have - just not that elaborate cause that's a whole lot of money for that setup) could have been used to fly different routes and find the perfect route to make the intended destination

How is having a flight simulator a bad thing? The pilot already has a ton of experience in the air, he knows what the plane is capable of. So the simulator is there for practice and his personable enjoyment. If this guy loves to fly as much as his friends and relatives have said so on the news, then i would be shocked if he did own some type of personal simulator. He also owned alot of remote control planes.

I didn't say it was a bad thing... I said it was elaborate and that it would have cost a lot of money. I have flown RC planes and also line controlled. I have flight sims on my computer and games on my iPad. I work on aircraft ... I get it

Here is what I said again

'The simulator setup the pilot had in his apartment (which I don't think is weird for anybody in aviation to have - just not that elaborate cause that's a whole lot of money for that setup) could have been used to fly different routes and find the perfect route to make the intended destination'

All of that said ... The dude had the baddest home flight simulator setup I have ever heard of ... the man was serious about his flight simulator

His setup is as if he is sitting in the pilot seat
That's 6 video screens, control yoke, throttles, rudder pedals,
Left, forward, right views out of the cockpit windows
Pilot's side of the Instrument panel with 3 displays
    Full overhead panel
Center panel between pilot and copilot seats

I wonder if those are 'touch' screens and he could control all the buttons, switches, and levers ?

Everything he needed to reach and touch to fly the 777 by himself if required

How expensive is that setup he has? Did it cost more than what a Malaysian pilot can afford? Could he have been training others?

cell phones emit very low power signals, and are only effective if w/in a short distance of a cell tower (...and provider on that tower)... once you get offshore, you have no cell service (towers/providers)...

The pilot had been with Malaysian airline for 33 years so he was raking in some pretty large money ... anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000 per year ... that might be a little low since he was an international captain. He could afford it.

I think the pilot was using it for planning purposes but it would certainly give a newbie a feel for the cockpit layout for sure. Setup of the flight course into the flight director and use of the autopilot would be fairly easy to teach

I would be guessing on the price but for the computer just to be able to run all the video screens at once where they are synchronized without freezing all the time would cost the most... Then again it might be all for show ... Who knows
It's a custom setup for sure

The Malaysian police said they looked at his simulator setup and said it was 'clean' ... Not sure I believe that

Glad somebody finally said that the 777 can fly a mere 2,000 feet above the certified limit of 43,100 feet... There is always safety margin built in

    From the above article:
"While it is true that the 777 was not certified to fly at 45,000 feet (it is certified to fly higher than most airliners,in excess of 40,000 feet) that does not mean that the aircraft cannot climb higher than that altitude. In fact, certification standards will allow for margins beyond the certification limits. While certainly not a safe or recommended practice, it would not be unusual for an aircraft certified at 40,000 or more feet to be able to climb to 45,000 feet without suffering catastrophic failures."
