Once everything is cleaned and bolted up, clear the codes and drive around for a day or two. If the code(s) come back, I wouldn't chance it. Otherwise, I'd be on my way and hope for the best.

That makes it an easy decision. Scrape it, vac it, then do short OCIs. There are also some additives that are like seafoam that you can use to help flush it. Most you add right before you change the oil.

Also do some research on using atf to clean it. Check out bobtheoilguy forums.

Yeah, just look at the old stuff. Google search just that domain for "atf sludge" or "cleaning sludge".

yup used that on 2001 camry with 275k on an engine that's knows to have engine build up. I remember first time hearing the engine. You just hear a lot of ticking and other noises. after one flush and using OE amsoil, the ticking almost went away. second time I used it, ticking went away.

to the OP, I hope you get all your sludge stuff resolved. try the amsoil stuff when you can.

Truck is back together. Test driven, no codes on the dash or Ultragauge. Engine seems to be running quieter, steady 190.4 degrees Fahrenheit, nothing leaking. 4.5qts of Castrol dino and 1qt of MMO. Will try to put 50-100 miles a day on the truck, change oil and check no.2 pan every 1,000 miles, 3 more times.

Thanks for all the help and I'll keep everyone updated.

I am having a very very similar issue to this. I have had some other codes go off too. But I do have a leak in my timing cover. I just bought the truck and haven't even driven it 1000 miles and it had the P0012 and P0022 and the oil pressure light. Is there something that a leak in the timing cover would cause related to this? I have not dropped my oil pan to look at the suction tube yet.

First, obvious question, but what is the oil level on the dip stick?

If the red oil light came on while driving, did the engine start making any noises? Hopefully not.

Is the dipstick tarnished with burnt oil? That would be an easy indicator of how the oil change intervals would have been, prior to your purchase.

Pulling the passenger valve cover is pretty easy, of you feel like there may be some clogged areas.
