If this is the case, why 2016 models were plagued with drivetrain issues and weren't completely resolved?
Some of trainny issues are similar to previously found in other Toyota models, like Camry.

My tune was mid tune and I still like it. Shifts seem fine, milage seems just a touch better and I like how it holds the higher gear longer when I come to slight incline at speeds 65 and above mine is also an auto and I just hated the constant down shifting when it did not really need to. Try the mid or low tune to see if it works out better

I guess you have two choices; let the tune tech adjust the tune to your liking. Or just leave it where it is and eat the $500 bones unless these guys have some sort of money back satisfaction guarantee.

Not much help here.... other than than I have OTT tune on a '21 Tacoma OR... and I have nothing like these complaints. OTT is the mod I would last give up. OTT techs who do the job are known/reputation as very service oriented and want to make the customer happy, fwiw.

I have Lite and can push ECT button for a notch-up in performance (Mild). No issues after a little more than a year of use. I run 87 out of the pump year-round. Just drove down from South Dakota to Kansas City, great driver on flats and hills, mostly 2-lanes, some interstates. 19 MPG over 760 miles with 285/75 tires. OTT made my truck a better machine. Engineers worry too much about emissions. Tuners are focused on driving performance. Like it and keeping it tuned!

It seems no one has had your issues. Luckily for you, I have.

I initially got the mild / medium tune. After a few weeks to a month, I noticed at a dead stop and beginning to accelerate, there was dead space to where you push about half an inch to an inch and nothing, then it would kick in instantly, making for a very jerky acceleration from the start. This did not seem to be there when I initially test drove it.

about 2-3 weeks ago I took it back and programmed lite / medium and it seems to have fixed it by 90% or so.

if it stays this way I will keep it and if not, I’ll request it to be removed. I have not experienced weird shift points though.

Agreed. I do not want to speak on behalf of the OTT crew, but I feel like I have read that they will flash you back to stock and refund if you were not happy about it. Maybe there is a time limit on it or something or maybe I am totally off base; but definitely something OP should discuss as one of the options with their Tuner if they haven't already.

this is exactly what I was feeling when I would come from a dead stop. You were able to word it, it was difficult for me to find the right way to say it. But that half an inch to an inch was exactly what I was running into as well. And of course, the shift from 1st to 2nd.

The responses on here have made me think about what my options are though. So we will see what happens this weekend.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Toyota's engineers are programming for an EPA certification, not driveability. Huge difference. I'm not on the OTT, but I am happy with what I'm running. It improves HP and torque (small amount, but definitely noticible), shifts better and the OTT comes with the benefit of CARB certification.

I laugh every time someone posts this "How dare you question the multi-degreed superior intellect of the Toyota engineers" statement. They truly are God-like, aren't they! :muscleflexing:

I had the same / similar issue and was thinking about an OTT to fix it. Then the truck started dying. Turned out to be bad fuel injectors. Now it runs great. They found my issue by running a scan tool on it while it was driving and it kept registering misfires that wouldn't trigger a MIL/CEL. See if you can get that diagnostic piece done.

I did this as well. Around $1300CDN for kit and tune pack. Reverted and grew to accept the stock tune. OV was jerky and shifts where rough. Didnt solve issue of laggy acceleration out of turns and made downshift clunk way worse.

22 OR AT - got the OTT tune beacuse 1.) the stupid gear hunting 2.) better performance with 285/75R16 tires. I went with mild/medium. The truck just feels better than stock certainly no dead spots. I never hit the ETC button (I have tried it a few times and I guess it's a bit . . . what ? peppier nothing astounding though) - To be honest I really just never think about it because it runs just with the mild tune.

    Welp,

I didn't get a response...but, quite a bit is going on here from other replies.

    Lots of different scenarios/results.

Folks reporting jerky throttle response with OTT...which I did have on initial tune.

Then I dialed it down a notch and have been happy with the performance since...

I would imagine there are many variables associated with the results participants experience.

If one buys a 3rd Gen used, that may be part of the problem.

Previous owners may have not treated the throttle like I did when I took ownership just 4 years ago, yesterday!

Owner's Manual gives instructions not to over-task your new vehicle...I drove like a grandma for a bit before I opened her up...so it could be a factor for the ECU/ECM.

I will say this, I just so happened to meet two Ford engineers many years ago (in a bar of all places - long story) and they definitely impressed me. I was not off roading back then but I did like to tighten up my suspension and go with bigger wheels and low profile tires, tweak the exhaust a bit etc. (it was phase I went through). It was like a mini class on what NOT to do and why (especially wheel off sets and back space with low profile tires - that was one of my things) and lowering the suspension ( which we do the opposite but just the same we get away from how the vehicle was engineered). And what you can do as long as you understand the ramifications to handling and wear and tear, you are probably going to effect reliability (like wearing out ball joints early - stuff like that) and yeah and void manufacturer's warranty. So there can be safety and reliability impacts when you start modifying your vehicle away from how it was engineered. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it - it just means you should be smart about it.

I don't doubt their intelligence. Doesn't matter how effing smart they are. Their bosses told them to program for maximum fuel mileage on the EPA test route, that's what they did. These tunes improve driveability with minimum impact to fuel mileage.

Exactly, ungod like. Don't overthink it. It's imperial fact (Toyota admits this in their 4 gen vids w/ head engineer talking - they know they deserved major sh*t for it in 3rd gen, and they got it - yes, despite sales... and they know their bullsh*t created the giant 3rd party tune market for Tacoma)) , the factory tune is a dog/stupid, spongy gas pedal is beyond annoying (all fixed w/ OTT )- even my wife hated it, power set for high revving (in a truck mind you) God knows why? Again, OTT is so far and above any other mod, tires, etc for 3rd gen. Certainly no negative effect on MPG and may even improve as many have reported.

I am an outlier here from stock since I got a different setup (S/C, 488s, 33s), but the OTT tune really made a big difference. It goes.
