I'm replacing the rear suspension of my truck... When removing one of the shocks I found that the bushing on the U-Bolt plate was on here pretty tight. When I finally cut it off it took a layer of rust from the mount off with it. Now that mount is noticeably narrower in diameter than the other. So much so that the new bushing goes on pretty loosely. Not so much that it can wiggle back and forth but it is definitely not snug.

Question is, how big of a problem is that? The shock will be held on by the nut/washer but will that little bit of play in the bushing be a safety risk?

The only thing to remedy that would be to get all new u bolt plates from the dealer, right? any advise would be greatly appreciated.

here you can see them side by side... the one on the left is the jacked up one and the rusty bushing next to it...

here it is with the new bushing on it... there is a slight gap....

How much movement do you have with the shock on and tight.

That will tell you if you have a problem.

Install the shock .... in most cases, the shock will be tight around that bushing after you install it and make up for the space.

As Wyoming mentioned ...after everything is installed and tight, you probably won't have any issues.

If you're worried about it, buy new plates or find used ones.

You also must remember the quality control on the bushings is not that critical

I know I have had some quite loose fitting over the years.
