Good day. I recently purchased a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. I'm not user of digital phones and want a device to do the job that it's supposed to do. My truck has what's considered a reasonably good GPS and I would like to know if others with the same truck has had both the operating and map versions updated? Toyota advises me that only dealerships can do updates on the infotainment unit that is in the 2020 Tacoma. Am I to believe that and if it is true has anybody had their units updated by the dealership? Would you provide the costs and time it took them to do the updates?
    Thanks......

No the JBL unit in the 2020 has no SD card slot and there's no USB port (that I can find) to allow use of a "stick"; but thanks for the reply.

I use Garmin GPS which it has lifetime updates for free. Garmin GPS cost may be vary based on the size and features you want. You will need to research and find you like.

I am not interested in going to dealership for maps updates... Not making sense.. I don't want to pay every time I get it updated by dealer.

You don't need a phone in order for head unit to work... Nav works without a phone but the phone is useful for sending address to headunit.

So far I know Toyota has renewal 2 years subscription for 169 dollars plus fees, see here: https://www.toyota.com/owners/toyota-navigation-system

Not sure if that subscription apply to all Toyota models.

I've used a Garmin GPS for over 20 years. The latest Garmin GPS that I purchased "sucks". It's a Drive Smart, uses a different operating system that the Zumo 660 and is just really hard to use. Again the new Garmin unit basically works with a digital phone which is something that I don't want to use. So Garmin....at least for me.....is not an option.

If you see the "DCM" with signal bars, the map will be updated automatically thru the cellular network if subscirption is valid.

You keep saying you don't use a digital phone, are you using a land line with rotary dial phone? All Mobile phone are digital now, there is no active cellphone using analog signals.

Thanks Chucky888. I'm surprised that Toyota didn't reveal that process to me. Any idea how the operating system of the infortainment system is updated?

The DCM does the update by itself, once a while my head unit will display a warning says "...update in process, radio function will temporary unavailable" or something like that. I mostly use Android Auto or Wayz, unless I go off the celluar network

You should see the cover under the climate controls and open that up and you may see the usb port in there. You may have usb port inside of the center console... open the armrest and there is cig lighter port or usb in it.

That is good for 2 years but renewal is optional but pricey.

I use Bluetooth on my iPhone for telephone, music and google maps or Waze. Not sure why you wouldn’t use something similar. If you have maps systems they know where you are.

2020+ map update is indeed dealer only. Toyota issues a magical USB periodically to dealers with the map file. If you're on the initial trial still the file is no cost, but they charge labor.

You can update the operating software on your own, with some effort, but not the map file itself.

Don't base the Zumo series on all of Garmin's their products. I've got a Garmin Zumo for the motorcycle and it has about ruined a couple trips for me where I carefully planned some fun and scenic routes only to be disregarded when it was time to get going. It's definitely not user friendly and takes frequent use to get comfortable with. But for point A to point B it'll get you there.

Thanks all for the suggestions. To Mattleg - it seems we are on the same page. Simple answer with no "strings" attached. When I entered my VIN # in the Toyota website for updates; they're message was no updates for your vehicle yet both the maps and operating system show installed dates of 2019. My dealership says they don't know anything about how to do the infotainment updates.
    Interesting......

To Jesse H - I used a ZUMO 660 for 20 years while riding my motorcycle. I did all my own route planning in BaseCamp and 99% of the time my routes on the Zumo were exactly as I planned them. National Park roads in North America were never inputted into the Garmin map application and that's the only issue I ever had that caused me grief. It's unfortunate - at least in my case; that Garmin now uses a different operating system and abandoned the older software otherwise I would've used that in my truck.

T-SB-0106-22 is the Toyota guide for the process, copy attached. The dealer I had update mine struggled even when I handed them a copy of it. Close to three hours as I recall, an hour alone just to find the one guy that knew about the USB drive. Charged half-hour labor as I recall, $90, something like that.

That website seems to lag behind. There is thread on here with better info and files.

    Edit: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/updated-3rd-gen-multimedia-updates.696603/#post-24639162

A bit dead now, but good info.

I love my old garmin driveluxe 51 with lifetime map updates. It does so much more than my wife’s built in gps. If I can’t find something similar when I buy my next vehicle then I won’t buy the built in one from the manufacture.

Thanks Mattleg. Really appreciate the effort you made to help me out. My thoughts after reading your latest post is that I will have to go to a dealership in a major centre to get this update done. It would make no sense to ask a dealership that pleads ignorance to get involved.
    Thanks again.....
