Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I desperately need your help because most of you guys have more Tacoma experience and knowledge than the folks that work in the shops!

I have 09 4DR Tacoma 4x4 that I FINALLY lifted and I am ready to put some killer wheels and tires. I got the ProComp 3" lift kit installed today and then I headed over to Discount Tire to install my Nitto Trail Grapplers M/T 295/70-17 with KMC XD Enduros. They looked great, but when the techs turned the steering wheel all the way and jumped on the truck they could see it rub against the frame! They told me it was probably because of the -6 offset of the wheel. He said I could probably try shaving off the frame and re-weld to not lose integrity, but I do not like the idea of messing with the frame. When I ordered the tires/wheels , the rep told me if the 295s don't fit, just put 285s, so I decided I would try the 285s. They ordered them for me and they will be in tomorrow. I'm hoping there is no rubbing at all in the shop. I won't know if there is rubbing on the road until I get it out the shop obviously..

Has anyone experienced bad rubbing with this setup and how did you alleviate the problem? What is the right OFFSET you need if you want a 33'' tire (285 or 295)? Is the solution just spacers and frame shaving? I'm not worried about rubbing the plastic in the front.. I'm worried about frame rubbing at high speeds and VSC kicking in and causing me to crash!

    Thanks for your help guys.

sounds like its the cab mount, the cab mount chop mod is very common mod. Id post a link but im on my phone search for it there should be quite a few threads about it.

There is a chance the VSC will act up whether you rub the frame or not

as above , is it rubbing at the cab mount ?

I'm not sure what part is the cab mount. When they turned the wheel LEFT all the way, the knobs were rubbing the frame. See Attached. Do you guys think I'll be ok with 285s?

with 285 you will still need to trim the stock bumper to prevent rubbing up front as well...

you can get away with not chopping the cab mount with 285/70/17 depending on your wheel's backspacing, but you may still rub on full stuff with a tire turned

295/70/17 will require cab mount chop, beating the pinch weld and a lot more cutting on your bumper and flare

if you're worried about cutting things, definitely stick with the 285s

Before you do tha cab mount chop any chance you can change the rim offset?? If you get a "0" offset rim you shouldn't rub anymore using 285's. Hell I've seen guys running 295's with out touching the cab mount or the fender liners but he was running a +12 offset

The 0 offset was on nationwide back order so I had to go with -6 cuz I just could not wait. They are about to do some trimming on the stock bumper front and back to avoid the rubbing (which I don't care bout trimming)... I think I'll be Alright... I don't think I will have any frame rubbing unless i hit a real bad bump.

SingleCabGuy, do you have any shop recomendations in the Rio Grande Valley area? I think I am going to have to get the cab mount chop because the VSC has already went off twice and beeped just as I was turning right into a Chick-Fil-A parking lot, that was at a slight incline (like maybe only 15-20 degrees).

I really don't want this to happen going up an on-ramp that is angled at like 35 - 40 degrees when I'm going 45 MPH. I'm going deer hunting this weekend for opening season, so I'll see how much rubbing goes on off road. I'm sure it's going to be a lot if I'm rubbing in a parking lot .. but only when I'm turning right. :(

I've already trimmed the front & rear fender corners, and fender plastic liners on both sides. (Attached is the front ride side. You can see I already sawed off a piece of the fender.) Although that helped a lot, I think the right tire is rubbing the frame when I turn right on inclines.

It's weird that my truck is not symmetrical, because all my rubbing problems have been when turning right , not left. I kind of wished I went with a smaller tire now.

this is how much i have cut behind the wheel

cab mount chopped, fender and flares both trimmed back as well..also have my pinch weld beaten back
    [IMG]

but i tend to wheel hard, putting my wheel in many odd positions, stuffing the tire in there in many positions, so it finds more things than normal to rub on

Just trimmed the corners of the inner fender that were about an inch an half wide at the ends. I think it's hitting more back against the frame now, not the fender. I'm going back to that spot where my vsc went off during lunch to take a picture of where it is hitting exactly

We offer a cab mount chop plate all you need to do is order this plate and show the shop this thread and they can do it for you. It's a very simple and fast modification and it should run you around $100.00 or less. and your rubbing problems will be gone. If your out huntin your going to hit that cab mount a lot so I would get the mount chopped asap.

Nyco, you do some extreme off roading! Nice Pics. Do you still rub the cab mount when you are off roading? What offset do you have on those wheels? Mine are -6.
