Hey everybody, I’m putting a new rack on and realized the lower stud of the horseshoe bracket that swallows the rack on the passenger side is stripped and I can’t find any part number for it or the nut that accompanies it. If anyone knows I’d greatly appreciate it! This is the bolt that normally sticks out of the frame when you remove the rack. Right side threads into a nut welded to the frame.

Did you try to correct the threads with a file? I was able to do this for a seat bolt I stripped, it is tedious and time consuming but worth a shot.

Just look at the build thread
Anyone know the torque spec for this stud going into the frame if there is one? I found the spec for the nut going on to the stud but not the stud into the frame.

I know this is a old thread. But do you have the part number for the nut as well?

So I’m in a predicament where the bolt I have for that horseshoe bracket on the passenger’s side of the steering rack is stripped. I have the part numbers, but unfortunately that doesn’t lead me to the thread size.

    Nut PN - 90179-14061
    Bolt PN - 90080-10126

I’m hoping to correct the threads of the bolt and the captured nut with a tap and die kit, but want to make sure I have the correct thread size first.

When I stripped the hole for the bolt in the cross member it looks like I ordered an M14x1.5mm helicoil kit to do the repair. If you want to double check that, the vertical bolt that runs through the steering rack and down into the cross member is the same size, I know because I accidentally swapped them and the lack of engagement is what stripped things out.

There’s a fb group 1st gen Tacoma part out and salvage. Might be able to find a used one there.

Okay, thanks so much for that! So, it sounds like we goofed in a similar way actually. Torquing the bolt in the bottom of that bracket was taking seemingly forever, come to find out, I was fully threaded through the blind captured nut, and was bottomed out on the frame with the bolt :frusty:

Crappy way to lose a bolt for sure, but I didn’t match things up to see that the bolts were different lengths. Definitely a learning lesson for me!

When you say you got a helicoil kit, did you just drill out the threads of the nut and install a helicoil? I ask because my initial thought was just to tap out the nut and buy a new bolt to install in that bracket. But I’m curious about other potential fixes as I’m not quite sure how jacked up the nut threads are (looking at the bolt, most of the damage just came from the end of the bolt bumping up against the frame and wearing down the first couple of threads).

Yeah, I used the shorter bolt by mistake and when I was torquing it the threads on the nut gave up because I was only engaged with about half of the threads I should have been. The bolt was fine but when I pulled it out the threads from the nut came out with it. I drilled the nut and put in a helicoil and bolted it back up. It's held fine for more than a year now. If you've stripped the bolt instead of the nut then a helicoil won't help you and you should just get a replacement bolt. You can run a cleaning tap through the nut if you think it is needed, but you can't drill and retap the nut to a larger thread size as a large bolt won't fit through the hole in the bracket.

Thanks @Skulking! Just re-tapped the bolt and nut last night to M14x1.5 when my new tap kit arrived. Had to specifically find one that went up that big as most of the smaller cheap kits end at M12. Anyway, that worked great and I'm happy to have saved my steering rack mount parts. I appreciate the help and everyone else who weighed in as well to help out!

Reviving this because I just crossthreaded the bolt into the crossmember. My plan is to do what is stated above and clean up those threads with a m14x1.5 tap. I found this in stock nearby but curious as to what tap wrench to buy. Not sure how the sizing for these chucks work as I've never tapped something before.

Gonna give it a try with that ace tap linked above. If anyone has suggestions, tips, comments, etc let me know!

Mike… how did this go with the tap you found at ACE? I am planning to do the same thing tomorrow. Noticed the same one in stock nearby. And what tap wrench handle did you end up using?
