Yup. I really hate all the "guessing". I'm a mechanic(non-automotive), and all this guessing & parts-changing is crazy. It's a Toyota 4-cylinder, just take it apart & find out what's broken!

Boy, That's bad luck. Hope it turns out OK in the long run.

I Think I'd have a long talk with the 1st repair shop. The $100 for the tow - well it was towed. But the Sensor and labor is an issue. I'd ask nicely for some relief. If they Balk Tell them you will have the 2nd shop remove the sensor and you will return it back to them for $400 (It's been installed but not used - they can re sell it - it's THEIR mistake/issue. I'd also insist at least of 50% refund on the labor. I'd stand firm and if they do not give you some decent relief I'd let them know that the Internet can and will cost them a lot more in lost business in the long run.

Not sure - perhaps others with more ECM knowledge can jump in .... Perhaps the ECM will not send spark if the position sensors are way out?? If so it would be a good reason they should have done a quick compression test - at least to confirm a major issue - and also to confirm the engine is worthy of the $$'s to be spent.

I had an oldie - 74 GM small block 400 - that, in summary, jumped the sprocket. IT was VERY noticible that it cranked over WAY too easy ...

Once the Engine is out perhaps the 2nd shop can give more info to help you in your refund with the 1st shop. Be sure to tell the first shop if all fails - small claims court (in Canada what's it called?) is often for satisfaction not just for $'s .

Don't want to tell you what I think of the first shop .....

    Best of luck!!

After a little "googling", seems like it's most likely an interference engine. Strange that the chain would be a problem with less than 200k on the clock??

I just read the same thing. Appears it is a interference engine. But should be good till 200k+. Looks like the guides for the chain wear out before the chain breaks and you should have heard noise coming from it.

    190k Kilometers (=approx 118 K Miles).

Also since I have a 2012 I4 2.7 I'd be interested if someone has a link to source that definitively show if it is a interference engine. I'm searching but can't find one yet. I Though it was not an interference engine - now I want to be sure ...

could be a bad headgasket causing no compression. i bet the chain didnt break. i would ask them to remove the valve cover and show you the chain is broken. only takes a few minutes and then you will know for sure.

    the fuk!

That blows. Are you still going to approach the first shop about replacing parts that weren't bad?

Also I'd check with the gas station you last bought fuel from. It might have been from there.

Bad tank filler seal or something.

Edit: also happy it turned out to be minor compared to a whole new engine...

BOTH of these shops should know whether or not that engine has compression before talking about replacing it. Bad fuel !=0 compression. Wow.

WTF? How can these shops even stay in business? 2 shops with absolute idiot technicians? I would never go back to either one of them and you damn sure better get your money back from shop #1.

Exactly! I can tell by the sound of the cranking if a motor has compression. Good compression goes rur__rur__rur__rur... No compression goes whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. 1 dead hole goes rur__rur__whr__rur__rur__rur__whr...
