Hey everybody, I'm having a very weird issue with my truck and the dealership is closed today so I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this while I wait till tomorrow to bring it in. For starters I've got a check engine light on that I thought was due to a loose gas cap because I've had that happen before, but now I'm not sure. Then, yesterday I went to fill my tank up at the gas station and the pump was acting weird and didn't want to engage properly and I was smelling gas while i pumped. I looked down and gasoline was collecting by my feet, it was rolling down the side of the fuel tank and the leaf springs and pooling by the rear driver side tire. I had somewhere to be and since it was only leaking while I was filling it I was gonna wait till today to address it. I went this morning and tried to fill up at a different gas station and had the same thing happen, now I'm certain that something is wrong on the trucks end. I can't find anything about this through searching Google or TW, can anyone please offer and help or experience? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the filler tube has come loose at the tank end.

So there's a tube that connects the fill funnel and the actual tank? That sounds likely, how can I get at it to see if that's the case?

Seems like something is stuck down in your gas tank funnel which is causing the gas to come back out...may be somebody put something in there or something.

No, it's not coming out where I'm pumping the gas in, it's coming out somewhere I can't see past the fill funnel

If you look inside the quarter panel from underneath, you should be able touch the pipe that funnels fuel to the tank. Does it feel loose? Does anything look amiss? If possible while fueling, look underneath to see where the drips are coming from. More than likely, something came loose or a gasket failed. Either way, it’s an issue the dealer needs to fix ASAP since exposed fuel during fueling they’ll take very seriously.

Your gonna have to crawl under and do some blind reaching. It should be a hose from filler to tank. If you have a inspection mirror it will help a lot. Follow hose from filler to tank. Wiggle and push. But don't get under it, gas hurts like a mofo if it gets in your eyes..

This is a good place to start. You will have to crawl under the truck but you may be able to see it in the space between the bed and cab

Thanks you guys, I just crawled under and I can see the filler hose, but it crosses behind the chassis before it meets the tank. It feels firm from the fill funnel area down to where it crosses behind where I can't see, and I can't see any obvious signs of it being disconnected, but obviously it is somewhere because it leaks like crazy while filling. Luckily I've got enough gas to make it to the dealer tomorrow

This makes sense of my check engine light as well, if it is indeed disconnected or open somewhere

No. I did drive on some hilly gravel roads yesterday, but at easy speed and this actually started before I did. I was filling up before I drove those roads, and before that nothing but highway and city driving

Okay that can't be the issue then. Sometimes off roading can cause damage beyond our reach. Specially branches. Good luck tho.

Ill guess either a loose clamp or someone tried to steal your gas by cutting the hose and jamming a siphon hose in it. That way they can crawl under your truck with a gas can to take the gas without being seen.

Can you tell if it leaks from gas sloshing around while driving? Or is it just when filling? That might help determine if the "leak" is above the top of the tank.

Strictly while filling. I filled half way when it first happened yesterday then drove 200 miles with no more spilling or odor after when I was filling it. Went again this morning to try a different gas station and it went all over the ground while I was filling it

Your vent tube may be the problem. Had this very problem on another vehicle.
