There are drains inside the bed rails that catch water that seeps under the weather strip that runs along each side of the bed, and they have a drain hose at the cab side ends that you're supposed to route through the drain holes in the bottom of the bed. The bed holes have to be enlarged to fit the hoses through them.

Fair point, for some reason it didn't cross my mind. I didn't think the tank was right below those drain holes (which it totally is) so even though I knew they would have to enlarge the holes I didn't consider that as a cause.

Does the hose fill the diameter of the drain hole now?

Yes. That's why I'm considering just laying the hoses in the bed, any water that makes it in elsewhere has a hard time draining with the hoses filling the holes. There's a 3rd hole in the middle but water tends to sit in the front corners

What kind of tonneau did you get? I just had this exact same issue. CEL a few days ago, which in fact was a couple days after getting my Bakflip MX4 installed. Have an appointment to take it in tomorrow, but when filling up today I had gas start leaking from the same exact spot you're mentioning.

Jesus, nevermind. Just went out and looked, and they (4wheel parts) definitely drilled to enlarge the drain hole in cab end of the bed, and sure as shit punctured that mesh fuel hose.

It was an mx4 as well. I bet it's the same thing man, the fuel fill hose is right beneath the drain hole they have to drill out. Take a flashlight and pull that drain hose out and look in there, take pictures and get the shop to save the hose for you. The guys who installed my cover payed all the repair costs.

Edit: sorry, didn't see your second response. Sorry this happened to you too, I hope the installer takes care of it.

Yep, I shined a light through the enlarged drain hole and saw where they hit the fuel fill hose. That mesh part is directly beneath that hole, and I can see that it's frayed, and it had gas residue on it. The truck is going to the dealership tomorrow morning, so hopefully it will be a quick fix. If I don't get the truck back tomorrow then I'll need a rental car, so hopefully 4WP makes this right without too much of a fight. That hose is super close to the drain hole, so I can see how it could easily happen, but you'd think they'd have done enough installs on Tacomas to know to look out for it. Thanks for following through with the resolution to your situation. Definitely to helps for me to know going in what the issue is.

Absolutley, I'm glad it can at least help to clear up the confusion. It was a 4 hour job for my dealership, they had to drop the fuel tank. Unfortunately for me they had to order the part and it took them 2 days to get it, so hopefully you have better luck than I did.

If that were to have happen then the thieves were being nice by not drilling a hole in your tank. Gas thieves were popping holes in tank around here when gas was 5 bucks a gallon

Dealer confirmed today what I was sure of, and this same exact thing did in fact happen to mine. Repair bill is $933 (mostly labor), and part will get here in a couple days. When I called 4Wheel Part to explain what happened they didn't ask any questions and said just to have the dealership call them, and they will provide a corporate card to cover the bill. Bummer it happened, but I can't complain about 4WP's handling of it. The lack of questions about it makes me think it's not the first time either.

Yeah the installer who did mine said they had already done this same thing to a 2018 Tacoma at another store location in a neighboring city so they were surprised and they didn't fight me at all. I hope this thread continues to help people, especially home installers because if they damage their own fuel hoses they're gonna have an expensive repair to deal with.

Maybe I'm expecting too much here, but aren't you always supposed to check what's behind the thing you're drilling into? Like in cars, houses, woodworking, ANYTHING involving a drill?

You would think. Seems like BAK needs better install instructions as well. Mind you, I have haven't read/watched them myself (recovering from shoulder surgery, so I knew I couldn't do my own install), but based on a couple other threads on here it seems that their install instructions say very specifically that no drilling is required. One install video I watched didn't show any drilling, but also didn't give any instruction on how to deal with the drain tubes. But, the holes either have to be drilled out larger, or you have to attach some sort of coupler (not included) to their tubes that fit into the existing drain holes in the bed. Otherwise those tubes are just flopping around in the bed. Seems like oddly important info to omit.

Curious as to why increasing the drain hole size is needed for a toneau cover?

@Norsemanvike does the OEM toneau cover require any drilling? I may get one to make my wait for a GFC a little more bearable.

The Bakflip has tubes that drain the rails on the cover itself. Those tubes don't fit into the holes in the bed.
