    Hi Everyone,
Been lurking on here for a few months now, just joined. Bought a 06 (Sept 05 build date) DCLB with 150k miles back in October. It always had an intermittent misfire on cylinder 6. Did some research, and found out about the notorious head gasket issues on the 05-06 tacomas.

I got a borescope and confirmed that my head gasket was leaking. Had coolant sitting on top of piston #6. Plus when I pressurized the system, i could watch drips running down the cylinder wall.

So i went about replacing the head gaskets myself. Took about 25hrs and $700. Now its all back together. But now it just cranks, no start. Am I missing anything? I tried to be super careful. Labeled and bagged everything that came off. Labeled all the connectors on the harness.

    Thanks
    -Kyle

Spray starting fluid into the intake while somebody else cranks it. If it starts, it’s a fuel issue. I think it’s possible to inadvertently swap the fuel pressure and return lines.

-Likely something very simple. Start with a thorough visual inspection. Look at every connector you even came close to touching, check all the harnesses, splices, etc. Make sure nothing is pinched, etc.
-Use a scan tool to check for any set or pending codes, and then look at freeze-frame data for all start-related functions
-In order, check for: Spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse

I would guess your timing is off when you put it back together. Or a sensor like a cam position sensor is damaged or not connected.

I checked for spark, nothing. And the plug came out dry. So i figured I was missing fuel and spark. Weird to be missing both. Pulled out my OBD2 scanner which can read live data. Cranked the engine over and my scanner said engine rpm remained at 0rpm. So i checked the Crank Position sensor, unplugged it. cleaned it. re-installed. And it gave an assuring *click*

Started the truck up again, and it fired right up. So clearly I didn't have the crank position sensor plugged in all the way.

But now with the truck running its throwing a CEL. Code is P0328. Is there a knock sensor ground somewhere? Or is there a knock sensor connector behind one of the cylinder heads?

Yes one on each head down in the valley. Hard as hell to get too.

Hey, I fixed this issue shortly after posting this thread. But for the sake of documentation, here's what happened. Plus if this helps anyone else, then it's worth it.

I used the following video tutorial to replace the head gaskets.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIbeoMpGxEc&t=786s

Around the 21:50 mark, they push the water pipes back, toward the firewall. The wire harness for the knock sensors are secured to the water pipes with a plastic clip. And when I pushed the pipes back, I ripped the wires out of the knock sensor connector. I bought a new knock sensor pigtail for about $12. Crimped the wires together and that took care of it!

Nice work, I was worried you'd have to pull a head to repair the wires. Tight fit in there, one of the worst design aspects of these engines.

Spray some peppermint rodent repellant in the valley from time to time. The knock sensors and wiring are notorious rodent food. Supposedly the spray helps, I supplement it with occasional prayer... replacing these sensors SUCKS.

Yeah, Pro-tip, those two water pipes are connected to eachother. However, if you hack-saw them apart, you can remove the larger dia pipe easily. It's secured with 1 bolt in the valley. After removing that pipe you'll have enough room to access the knock sensors + knock sensor connectors.

Correct! But for the sake of clarity, I fixed the head gaskets back in Feb of 2021. I'm just really late to update this thread. I've put about 10k miles since the head gaskets. So the P0705 code is likely unrelated.
