Any thoughts why my truck might not be enganging in 4hi? Indicator light doesn’t come on. Truck drives in 4hi but is clearly only in 2wd. 4lo works good and indicator light comes on.

you have the push button 4wd?

    Switch might be bad.

You’re probably going to need to get in there with a volt meter and start tracing where you get voltage, and where you don’t.

In 4lo, is the light flashing or solid?

No button just the good old shifter. When I shift into 4lo the light comes on and stays on.

    Oh, well, that’s different.

I’m no expert on transfer cases, but you might have an internal issue with your t-case... maybe a linkage dor something.

Was this issue ever solved? I'm having the same issue. No push button transfer case. Old fashioned lever. No 4hi. Only 2wd, and 4 low.

Ive had the same issue for the last 4 years, hasnt bothered me too much with 4low and 2wd functioning but theres definitely been some moments where 4hi wouldve come in handy... Found a oem front diff actuator off a local parts truck, will install later next week and let you know if this fixes the problem (4low working with light on and engaged, 4hi no light and not egaging front diff) 2004 2.7l 4wd MT J shift no buttons

I'm looking forward to your reply! Pretty much in the same boat as you. Not a huge deal, but might as well figure it out in case it turns out to be a bigger problem before it turns into a major problem.

Why would you replace the ADD actuator? If 4LO functions you know the ADD works. I'd probably look at the transfer case 4HI indicator switch and circuit first.

The 4wd shift rail is on the passenger side so there should be an indicator switch at the top of the tcase on the passenger side.

There's a plunger on the end of the switch that closes the circuit. When in 2wd it's open. When you shift into 4wd it's closed. Put it in 4wd and test for continuity. As stated, if 4L is working it's not a problem with the ADD system.

Does anyone know if the ADD actuator on the front diff is the same part on 2.7l as the 3.4l? Also are the 2001-2004 tacoma ADD systems all electrical (no vacuum) and interchangeable?

    Lacking more specific information.
    Same year same front diff.
Your 2004 ADDs are electric,.and lack vacuum hook up to allow plug n play Vacuum ADDs.
    2003 2004 definitely electric ADDs
2001- 2004 same front diff other than vacuum vs. electric ADDs

    Good luck finding anything there.

So I can only swap out my ADD with 03-04? I have 2004 Tacoma 2.7l MT with the J shifter (no buttons to activate 4wd). Gear ratios come into play? Could I use a ADD from a 03-04 with a 3.4l? I’m heading to Sacramento, I looked at their inventory and they have a lot of Tacoma’s but I’ve still yet to see a Tacoma at my local pick n pull
