Depends. Your truck is an 07 based on truck info, correct? Does the noise only happen when you turn the key and try to start it? If yes, what you may be hearing, and this is speculation because I'm not there to hear it, is the starter motor spinning. If the starter gear isn't sliding up and engaging the flywheel to spin the engine, then the starter is just spinning. Again, this is just an possibility.

Sound similar to drill? I mean it sounds like a drill spinning when the door is open...

If you are standing in front of your engine with the hood up facing your truck the starter is located just below the the headers on your drivers side. Not sure the best way to go about removing. Probably through the wheel well with lots of adjustable/flexible sockets and wrenches. Good luck and take some pics if you attempt this job.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Yes, it's just a motor with a sliding gear on the end of it.

If you decide to pull the starter, be sure to first remove the negative cable from the battery post and ensure that it cannot drift back into contact with that post.

How can you have 4000 post here and know so little about your truck?

That certainly sounds like its the starter to me. The gear may be stuck in place or sheared. You may be able to replace just the gear for a few dollars. Not sure though, Ive never worked on a Tacoma starter.

You can have the starter rebuilt by local shops that specialize in rebuilding starters/alternators/etc.

The problem with this is down time. If you can't afford that, you'll need to source a new or rebuilt starter.

Stay away from Auto Zone. Their starters/alternators are pure crap. I have a feeling the same holds true for a lot of the other mass marketers.

This right here. Ive had the unfortunate experiences of replacing parts with their crap only to have to replace it immediatley afterward.

Mostly likely it's the battery... goto autozone have the battery check see if it's holding charge. If it's still ok, jump in the norhstar battery group buy. Maybe time to upgrade 31m :D

I think it's the starter... But I have no downtime... Where to get one that won't take me? If it was the battery it should have cranked when I tried to jump it... I still have full electrical...

Yank the battery - call a friend - take it to anyplace that can "load" test it for you. It may not be your problem; then again it might.

A lot cheaper/easier to replace a battery that a starter. If it passes a load test, you can look elsewhere.

Well I am at QT waiting for my uncle to come pick me up( where my company dropped me off) he says he knows how to test if starters are bad and knows how to rebuild them... So is there anything special about our starters I need to tell him before we start this endeavor or is it like the rest?
