Where in socal? I'm running 285-75x17 with cmc and trimming. Passenger side still rubs plastic in reverse with wheels turned to the left. Drivers side rubs the mount turned to the right if going too fast over bumps.

As far as cmc there's a bunch of shops that do it so a better idea of where you are would be helpful.

I would say that with our trucks, 95% of the time, with aftermarket wheels you will end up having to cut/trim something. The only way to avoid this is to stick with the OEM or TRD wheels with OEM tire sizes. Most folks want an aggressive stance and bigger tires. This can be easily achieve, but extra work will need to be done.

More than likely, all that needs to be done is trim off a little plastic to get the necessary clearance. Sometimes the rubbing sounds a lot worse than it actually is. I would suggest you go back to the shop and have them trim where it's rubbing. Just don't let them get away with trying to charge you for any of that.

I would rather have a local TWer that has dealt with this problem fix it than let the shop that said it would work take out more than was necessary just to get you to go away.

She did mention that the shop has been around for 40yrs and I'm sure it's not the first time they've done a lift and tire setup on a Tacoma. Shops that do hack jobs will not last this long. I can understand your point of view, but if I paid a shop to do the work, they need to make it right.

Just b/c it rubs doesn't mean they're not good at what they do. This issues can be easily taken care of.

This. I dont even have a 2nd gen but have done 3 cab chops for local guys, & the guys here locally that do this, do it very well, from the chop to plating it off.. (Jason & Tyler, both N. County)

I would still rather have someone who has already successfully done this MOD than leave it to a shop that may or may not have encountered this, I was amazed at how many shops DO NOT know of the Tacoma rub issues..

& I haven't seen nor heard anything from OP... Are you jerkin' our chains here Randy ??...:p

Don't you think they would have told her about this before they did the work & fixed it then if they knew?

Hey at least you can blame it on someone else over looking that issue.
I spent some time putting a lift kit on my truck and when I went to put the stock wheels on they wouldnt clear the tie rods.
I was less than impressed. I read through the install manual about five times to see where it said this would happen. Nowhere in the manual it said this, though when I closed the booklet there it was right on the front page in bold STOCK WHEELS WILL NOT FIT WITH THIS LIFT.
Felt like an idiot hilighted the bold writing so I can always feel like an Idiot.
I understand how you feel. lol

First, thank you to everyone who took the time to post a reply to my situation. I really felt supported and used many of the words that were shared. Sorry I did not respond sooner. Here is what happened. I will post truck pics in the next day or so. :)

Well, I decided to take my truck back to the shop, 4West in Colton, CA where I bought my tires, wheels, step and lift since they had done everything. If there was a mistake made, it was theirs to correct.
I told him that the tire calculation was wrong and that I had since called 4 Wheel Parts and Discount Tires, both who gave me me smaller tire recommendations. When I said that I wanted smaller tires, he argued with me and said that I had told him that I wanted that tire size. I reminded him that I had specified the brand BFG All Terrain, but that he did the tire calculation for size based on the lift/leveling kit he was installing. From the get go, I realized there was no way I was getting different tires at this point.
I also asked him if he had noticed any rubbing when he test drove it last week. He said yes, but minimal. So, I asked him why he hadn't mentioned it to me before I drove home? He said he forgot to. I told him that I didn't want my new truck chopped up. He called me a few hours later and said that they looked at it and that it only needed minor trimming at the bottom of the front fender wells. I discussed that it might also be rubbing on the mount and might need a CMC. I told him that if it needed aggressive trimming that I did NOT want that on my new truck. I made sure he knew that when I drove it full of girlfriends the rubbing was worse. He said that he would load up the guys and drive around in it after the work was done. 800lbs, no rubbing!
Picked it up afterwork today. I drove it home (Redlands, CA), and did not notice any rubbing after the fender well trim. Seems ok.
I learned many lessons. Primarily that I really should have done my own research. Guess I focused on the pretty wheels that I liked and tires that I had read good reviews on. I trusted him to pick the tire size when I should have at least cross referenced that myself. Anyway, I'm just glad it's over and I get to enjoy my new truck.
I didn't mention it earlier but this was the second snafu I had with the shop. Before this, when they first called me told me that my truck was ready, they said everything went well except that when they were putting the wheels on the tires, they broke one of the valve stems/sensors. He said that they drove over to Toyota and bought a new one $81 and put it on in the shop. He told me that they would eat that valve cost since they broke it, but that I needed to take my truck over to Toyota and get them to recalculate the TPMS valve stem/sensor. Or leave it alone if I didn't mind a light on my dash. I asked him if it was going to cost me anything at Toyota. He said, that he did not know. I called Toyota who told me that they could do the recalculation for $100 but that there was a three hour wait. So I called 4West Colton, CA back and told him that I shouldn't have to pay the $100 or take it there and wait for 3 hours. He hesitantly agreed to do it. I think it was only because I had not paid for my lift, tires or wheels yet. I later read online that Discount tires has the machine that can recalculate and only charges $45 (good to know for future reference).

So you can imagine my frustration later when there was rubbing. Anyway, sounds like rubbing is pretty common and possibly easily fixed. I just hated having to argue with the shop on two seperate occasions for something they should have handled. So glad it is over. Even though it seems fine now, I would not go back there ever!

Thank you again to all who replied to my post! Pictures to come!

Well that took a lot of effort to get to a (hopefully), satisfactory ending. As they say, live and learn right? Glad we could of help to you. We take pride around here in helping folks out (when we're not cutting up and BSing each other :) ), hope you decide to stick around, there's lots of fun stuff you can do to your truck off of this website.
