I was thinking about that yesterday. Saw it on we-crash board last year and thought it was funny. The wife and I also talked about it a few weeks ago regarding what we would do with the 4runner if something major happened like the transmission. We definitely set ourselves up for it. :(

And it's internal. I guess there wasn't any surprise there. Will know more tomorrow to probably confirm a full rebuild.

On a plus side he said if we put a shift kit in it they would increase the warranty to 3 years/50k.

So the shop keeps telling me that some Toyota transmissions have to have the transfer case rebuilt with the transmission because they're built as basically one unit and he's not sure what I have. I've told them twice now that the transfer case can be removed from the transmission. I'm sure he's just covering his ass but he said it's a Toyota specific thing. Anyone know what vehicle would have this setup? I figure it's a rav4 or something.

If he calls me tomorrow and says he has to rebuild both for this reason I'm going to send him to Snorkie's build/4x4 conversion thread and find 10 builds on Pirate with dual cases and tell him to drop the bs.:goingcrazy:

Wanna say older models have the transmission and transfercase together.

We did a 5spd swap on a 87 4runner that had that setup.

Be nice to them... They can really screw you now that they have the 4runner in there hands.

We have picked up quite a few vehicles from other shops that the client decided to have us fix it and once we pick it there is always missing parts.

Fawk, forgot about that. Makes sense though.

edit: can anyone tell I'm not use to having my vehicles at a shop. I do practically all my work I can myself. Not including alignments last time I had a vehicles at a shop almost this long was when I had the timing belt charged on the taco right after I bought it.

Got a call today with the tear down results. I was told a needle bearing having something to do with overdrive parts failed resulting in the party's going everywhere and taking out a planetary so sounds like Snorkie was right.

Just over $3500 otd with shift kit, upgraded torque converter, and 3 year 50k warranty.

A lil high I think but not much I can do.

Thanks, but hoping to get it back today or tomorrow from the shop with a full rebuild.

Since a youtube search found no videos of the SK 340 shift kit from transgo I plan to ask them when I can romp on it and will video the instrument panel while doing so.

Thats about what I paid to have my F150 tranny rebuilt a couple years ago. Same warranty and shift kit as well. The only part they could really salvage from mine was the bell housing.

Thats about the going rate . I beleive book time on the overhaul including the transfer case is about 18 hours .
Then removal and installation plus shop supplies and new fluid .
The trans go shift kit is an excellent idea . Not really designed to make your trans shift more agressive , they are designed to compensate for known issues within the transmission directly from the factory .

You can get a transmission from Toyota for much cheaper. 1700 with a core.

Little late for that now. Oh well I'm sure after labor at the stealership (joe myers) it'd been about the same. The one near the house is high as hell too. Front axle seals are $5 higher vs the one in Conroe.

And it's back. Trying not to look at the bank account right now. Stall is noticably higher. Shifts feel good to. Much better than the slushies before.

    Good to hear .

Why did you go with a higher stall converter ?
What shift kit did they install ?

Feels like 2300 to maybe 2500 on the stall. Stang has a 2k stall and the 4runner has a lil more slip.

They said when I got the shift kit they did a little higher stall with it. Almost doubled the warranty so kinda hard not to do it for only $300 more. Shift kit is a just the basic transgo. http://www.transgo.com/products.php...d=253&countdisplay=1&start=0&addcountview=Yes Didn't want the HD one as it's the wife's vehicle.

I plan to video the shifts in the next week or so. I'll past a video since all I found on YouTube was the hd kit.
