Help with 2000 2.7 skipping

2000 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 L4
5 speed 180,000 miles
Has 2 coil packs with spark plug wires


I am having a slight hesitation issue with my truck! At idle you can barley hear it running some what off but I am very anal about my stuff! Once you get on the throttle it sometimes skips slightly like not firing right or something. It’s seems to skip at lower rpm like around 2000-3000. When you rev it up it doesn’t seem to be skipping! If I fill up the tank with gas it’s doesn’t seem to change or run tank to empty! I need help this truck is about to drive me crazy! If I wasn’t so anal I wouldn’t even worry about it!

I am going to have a friend of mine check my valaves. The only thing else I Know to do is replace injectors and fuel pump!!!

I have replaced the following

Battery

Factory denso spark plugs
Have replaced them multiple times to see if any change to no avail!!

Ngk performance wires

New denso coil packs

Mass air flow sensor

Egr modulator

Egr valve

Pcv valve

All hoses

Coolant sensor

Cleaned throttle body

New throttle positioning sensor

New idle air control valve

K&n filter

Fuel filter

Front oxygen sensor

Cat had been busted out with rear sensor fooler by urd

Exhaust header

All exhaust leaks fixed

All parts have been done in last 6 monthss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure I have left out something I will add to list if I remember!!!!!!!!

I only run 93 octane in every tank! I have also run my tank until empty to make sure no water! I have ran seam foam, Royal Purple injector cleaner, I have sea foamed the engine!! no abnormal engine sounds like knocking etc.... no leaks or smoke, no burning oil or coolant!



Please help if you can thanks guys any good I input is wanted!!!

 

Have you ever replaced the fuel filter?

 

How empty do you ruin your tank every time? Running it dry repeatedly will fry out your fuel pump

No I haven’t can that cause skipping and woukd a cel show up if it was bad!

 

I just did it a few tanks ago just to make sure there wasn’t any water in there! Only one time lol!

 

ok if your referring to " Skipping" as a rapid misfire, then yes it could, but it is possible for a sensor on its way out to momentarily loose pickup signal and cause this. make sure all your plug boots are seated properly on the cap as well. I had a loose insert once inside the boot and cause this exact issue. you could also have a injector on its way out, but it doesn't sound like a fuel issue. Valves out of adjustment are not going to cause this issue either. my 3rz is on 190k and I have never been done.

 

How are your mpg has it decreased, does your truck feel weak accelerating at low rpms, or have trouble going past 70-75mph? Or maybe your engine revving sounding louder then it should be (can also seem like your engine is sounding loud close to the intake of the vehicle instead of the overall engine - specific for the 2.4/2.7 engines) in comparison to how much acceleration your actually achieving.

These are all symptoms of a old fuel filter. Not sure thats your issue or not though going off what your saying, but I'm not sure I understand what your meaning by skipping.

 

Skipping, misfire, hesitation or like a slight jerking! I will check into my wires more!

 

Fuel filter was just changed less than 6 months ago! When I accelerate sometime it does cut out or I do experience slight power loss! Engine sounds normal other than you can hear in my exhaust a skipping sound when it starts acting up!

 

Leak down test before anymore parts bazooka

Sounds like a burnt valve/seat to me if everything else is in good condition

 

I will have my buddy do all those test I cant. I am not leaking any coolant or burning any oil, I have monitored it for months it’s been doing this crap!!!!!

 

I sure hope not but I will have all that checked ASAP since she ain’t my daily!

 

Typically a burnt valve won’t manifest itself in any other way but an occasional skip. Especially on cold start it will be more consistent. Have you ever had the valves adjusted?

 

No I haven’t but I know I should have right after I bought it. I plan on getting it done this week if my guy can get to it!

 

Getting the camshaft senor now and factory coil pack will see what happens!!

 

Take the oil cap off, park a new truck underneath it, put oil cap back on

 

About ready to swap the engine to a Cummins 4bt or a tundra v8 lol



Swap the cam sensor out what a bioch!!! Swap the coils out with factory denso ones not parts house crap!! Have to take her out for a ride tom and see how she does!!
