Help with 2nd gen tweeters

Never tried tapping either but I'd think HDPE would be more receptive. Acrylic is brittle. I built an enclosure window in an isobaric config out of acrylic once. 2 Actually - one on the side and one below. It took me & my buddies with good wood shop tools many tries to get it right - cracked sheet after sheet drilling the screw holes. HDPE is a lot softer, but never had cracking issues. Do have to be careful cutting the thick stuff though - it gets hot and cuts get unpredictable. Good idea with inserts in the baffle itself - that expands options a lot. I'd just be conservative with the tap. Countersink it before so it will sit flush then slowly run the tap.

 

Wanted to update my thread and let you know what I ended up doing. Hopefully this can help someone else.

I originally had pioneer TS 6 1/2 2 way speakers in front with everything else oem. I moved those to the back and I bought SoundOrdnance 6.75 component speakers from crutchfield.

I read pretty much every thread on the 2nd gen tweeter situation and decided to keep the factory harness untouched. So I unplugged the oem tweeter and cut the harness between the speaker and plug. The oem tweeter is wired in reverse so red=negative. I then plugged the the tweeter connection back into the truck and connected the cut ends to the SoundOrd crossover.


The 6.75 woofer was then connected to the crossover using the SoundOrd wires and the factory plug for the 6x9 was left unplugged.

I used an old plastic cutting board and made tweeter adapters, traced the oem tweeters and cut using a dremel cutting wheel.

From start to finish it probably took about 6 hours but the end result is completely worth it. I’m going to take the front door panels off today and add pictures here, I was just way too tired yesterday and wanted to get things together in case I needed the truck.

 

How are you liking the sound ordinance components. Also are you suing the factory deck or aftermarket? Have you added an amp yet

 

I like them a lot. I spent hours listening to crutchfields sound comparisons before choosing and they sounded as good as ones that were twice the price.
My head unit is a Kenwood 9903, no separate amp but i have a Kenwood underseat subwoofer connected. Went with that one mainly for ease of install, it connects to the fuse box in the dash instead of through the firewall to the battery.

 

Thanks. I have a 2010 DCLB and I’m debating on what route to go for HU and speakers. I was debating on the Audio Control ACM 4 channel amp. It has a small profile so could mount almost anywhere without taking up storage compartments

 

There are a lot of options. I think the biggest difference would be starting with your headunit, I could never go back to that ancient POS that toyota used back in 2009.
With my kenwood, the underseat sub, and the component speakers I think it's a good, well balanced and relatively inexpensive system compared with some. You can leave the rear speakers, I only replaced them because I already had a set that would fit. I really don't think they do much.

 

i have some MB Quart components from a previous system i may throw up front after i decide on a HU to get started.
