Having an issue with my 2006 trd OR.

Few weeks ago I noticed 4wd wouldn’t engage. Read through some threads and this weekend replaced the front diff actuator. 4wd works now, but the light continues to flash and never stays solid. It also will not come out of 4wd unless I turn the truck off and then back on, and then shift into reverse and then into drive.

Could it be that the switch is also bad? Or should I be looking elsewhere like the transfer case?

If it not disengaging your t case is loaded up this is normal. Don't shut your truck down just put it into reverse and roll back a bit and it should release

Ive tried that, still doesn’t work. I can tell when 4wd engages by the clicks coming from I guess the ecu, but when I switch back to 2wd, nothing happens

That click could be a relay and a solenoid actuating your tcase to engage

That’s not normal at all. Mine engages or dosengages immediately. Shouldn’t have to reverse.

    I would suspect the switch

I’ve ordered a new dash switch and the 2 position sensors/switches on the transfer case. Can’t understand why 4wd engages but won’t disengage

When gears are together and loaded up I don't care how strong you are you are not pulling them appart. Putting the truck in reverse or forward to unload the gears is a fact.there is no way a dinky 12v solenoid is going to achieve that.

But you shouldn’t have to go in reverse. It should disengage simply driving forward

No that all really depends on which way the case is spinng. 2 gears make a different movement then 3 gears. If your driving forward the case is loaded up in one Direction and common sense say going the opposite direction will unload it

So do you have to reverse to get out of 4wd.

Kinda defeats shift on the fly huh..

Awesome CB setup, TRD leaf springs, matching camper shell...more to come some day.
Interesting...i don't suppose you have changed the fluid lately in the t-case?

    Thanks gear cruncher

    Anthony250f read the bottom line

If the four-wheel drive indicator light or the 4LO indicator light blinks
    -Shifting from H2 to H4
    • If the four-wheel drive indicator continues to blink, drive straight ahead
    while accelerating or decelerating.
    • If the four-wheel drive indicator continues to blink and the buzzer
sounds, stop the vehicle or reduce the vehicle speed to less than 62
mph (100 km/h). Operate the switch again.
    -Shifting from H4 to H2
If the four-wheel drive indicator continues to blink, drive straight ahead
while accelerating or decelerating, or drive forward or backward in a short
    distance

Shift on the fly works great but the gears are still loaded up. Until you try to pull apart a loaded gear I don't think your going to understand this concept

    Was thinking this....
He said he replaced actuator so I think you have to drain the fluid's to do this

Front diff actuator, not the t case one. I’ll change the t case fluids this week when I swap the switches.

Only had this truck a few weeks ( but had a 2007 before) so no idea when or if the fluids were ever changed. I also don’t think the 4wd was ever used so I’m just trying to get everything straightened out

Front diff fluid was black, so I’m expecting the transfer case to look the same.

    Cool

I understand that may help get him out, but
Still shouldn’t have to do that

Go test drive a new tacoma and report back if the truck won’t shift out of 4wd unless you reverse.

I did buy my truck brand new it had 11km on the clock and this truck like many other vehicles with shift on the fly that I've owned if it won't disengage you roll back a foot or 2 and the the case will unlock. But don't listen to me I'm not a mechanic. Oh wait I am and if I'm not mistaken gearcruncher runs a gear shop

But I'll be the big man here your right.
