I have a 2008 Taco 4x4 2.7 liter 4 banger with 112,000 miles. recently my air conditioning stopped working. was told that all I'd have to do was get it recharged, which i did, and this seemed to work fine, for a little while. used the a/c twice, and had to use the defrost three times. now, it's not working again. compressor is not kicking on at all. any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

    AC quit working.
AC was recharged and started working again.
AC quit working again shortly after.

You have a leak in the system. It has a pressure switch that will prevent the clutch from coming on when the coolant pressure is below the set point.

Take it to a good AC Shop get the leak repaired, vacuumed out and recharged in that order. Then you should be fine.

To add: get the leak fixed sooner than later.

The refrigerant has oil in it that lubricates the compressor. Compressors can seize if they are not ran for long periods... then you'll be in for a heavier bill. Ask me how I know..
