I'm hoping some of the smart Ham and cb radio folks that hang out on here might be able to help me out with something. Mildly on topic because it's for a handheld scanner I'd like to use in my truck.

I have a little hand held race scanner from radio shack that can scan from cb range all the way up through Ham, police, marine, air traffic. Tons of frequency range and it does pick up stuff. I like playing with it.

Problem is it has a rubber duck style antenna that's literally about 2" long!

I'm thinking if I got a better/longer antenna, either a longer hand held style or maybe a magnetic roof mount, I could increase its reception power and really make use of it in the truck to scan and listen to (mostly) cb and ham ranges. Seems like most cops and emergency are going trunking or digital and this thing can't do those I don't think, so those aren't important to me.

Of course the problem is I'm sure there is no such thing as an antenna that is actually well suited to scan all frequencies. What might be a good compromise? It uses an sma style connector, but of course I could adapt it to bnc or even the cb style... What is it pl259 or something?

What style of antenna might be the best compromise to try to receive as much as possible on the cb and ham bands? And forgive me if this is a dumb question, I'm just finding an interest in radio and very new to it. I'm interested in getting a ham cert but for right now I'm just dabbling around.

    Thanks in advance.
