looking at some of the icon suspension lifts for my 16' tacoma 4x4 dbl cab sport. I would like to put on 285/75/16s. Anyone have any opinions on what has worked for them. I am okay with minor cutting but wont be doing a whole lot of intense off roading. Just a lot of dirt/gravel roads and of course street roads.

Been looking trough the forums for quite some time now and am having a hard time on choosing the right kit, tire/wheel size and any other accessories I may need on top of one of the icon stage kits.

I know there is a search function, trust me i've used it. If anyone has pictures of their setup with what I am talking about, I would love to see them.

    Thanks guys

    Do this and not worry:

    265/70R17

I went with 5100s and 885s with Icon rear progressive AALs from Headstrong....

You will absolutely go happy... different truck beefier ride with no lean and in 4x4 hit the gas.... street great trail great. The Sport suspension is harsh in comparo.

Planning on installing icon stage 4 lift (tubular) with cooper stt pro 285 75 16s.

I would like to use scs wheels. Anyone else with this combo? Scs seems to be sold out of the matte jet black on some wheel options though... i like method but dont like the fake beadlock pattern in chorme or gold. Anyway to change it to black?

Also is there going to be a huge difference between stage 4,5 or 6 icon lifts? From the parts list looks like the reservoir goes from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and the stage 6 offers adjustability depending on what type of ride you want for a given time. Worth the extra $$?

you're gonna have to max out the lift, do a cab mount chop, beat the shit out of the pinch weld, trim the flares, and need a lot of positive caster. You'll probably still rub the front bumper cover some at full lock going over bumps unless you get a plate bumper. Icon lists prices on their website

Seems like some have issues with rubbing, some dont on the 285's. Hard to say really. What size down from a 285/75/16 would work better? I really like the 285 look.

they're full of shit if they run 285's and NOT rub. Even with a 265/75/16, you'll rub a little without positive caster, but won't need to trim much. If buying new wheels, save yourself some trouble and get 17", the 16" are really close to the caliper and some idiots will put the wheel weights where they will hit and get knocked off, or they make the fronts clear, then you go and rotate tires and knock them off the tires that were on the rear. Not so much with 265's, but the 285's are a bitch to get balanced and might need a lot of weights. You might be able to find a 255 tire that will is close to the overall diameter of a 285? Some say those will work without much rub because they are skinnier than a 285, but close in diameter.

Okay so if it's not a 285/75/16 then what 275 would work better? I really wouldnt like to drop to a 265...

^^ Hit it on the head. I just did a stage 7 ICON kit and had to chop and trim the fender liners and flares in order to get it to not rub moving forward. In reverse from mid to full lockout i still get a little bodymount and air dam rubbing. The rear has never been a problem the front depending on the offset of the wheel will get the common spots that are mentioned routinely on the forum. This is my 3rd lifted Tacoma and I've had a 4runner as well with comparable suspension and once you dial in the common accommodations of trim and cutting its no worries. For many people they cringe at the sound of cutting things which makes the worry warts stop from moving forward with any mods. Honest option of course.

After doing some research, I'm starting to lean towards 255/85/16. Was originally not entertaining the idea of the skinny tire but with the proper aggressive tread, this might just be the direction I will head. Minimal if any trimming required on a 3' lift. Fills up the well nicely on a lifted truck and will work just fine for my application.

I would stray from the 255 since 285's look to skinny already. Get 285's with 4.5 back spacing wheels and prepare to cut and do body mount chop if you do any form of off roading.

I don't know about that. LadyRed has some Toyo Open Country 255/85/16 M/T's on her 16 and they look just fine to me. I'm also trying to balance purpose with appearance. With this truck already having some gearing issues, last thing I want to do is run 285's. Besides, it's all a matter of perspective. You're always going to find someone running ridiculous tires that will make yours feel inadequate.

What 4.5 backspacing wheels you guys recommend? I like scs a lot but seems they are sold out in the dark colors. Method is alright but i dislike that fake beadlock look. What else would be a solid option?

I think I will go with the 285/75/16... i know if i go 275 or 265 i will regret it later on and want the 285s.

Also did you do any sort of regearing? Seems like some do it others don't. Guess its best to see how it runs after amd go from there.

I know its more of a personnel preference but I would really advise you to see those tires in person. 285's are only ~11.2" wide when I think 33x12.5" are the standard look. Plus you are going to pay a little more for a 255/85 since its not really a standard size and will have to be ordered. If you are looking at E rated tires you are only looking at around 5 lb diff which is a total of 20 lb rotating mass which is around 60 lbs static load which isnt that much to really affect the feel of gearing. I'm all for purpose thats why I paired my KO2's 59 lbs with 16" FN wheels 18 lbs a wheel with the correct 4.5" back spacing. Stock wheels are ~24 lbs and most aftermarket ranges from 24-29 lbs a wheel alone.

Just looking out for you from buyer regret.

I went with FN konig Countersteer wheels 16" @ 18 lbs a piece with 4.5 BS. Even with this set up I was thinking I need 35" tires instead.

At 33" tires its hard to justify regearing cost. I will tell you once you install tires disconnect the battery to force the computer to relearn driving habits. It will eventually learn with out disconnecting the battery but it will still think you are on stock tires and the shit points aren't the same with larger wheels just so slightly. This will help a little. Once these tires go then I plan on going to 35" than I'll regear to 4.88 but this will all begin once the truck is paid off.
