Hi everyone I’m new here. I searched through the forums but can’t quite diagnose the sound my truck is making. It’s a 2012 V6 4x4 extra cab with 93k mi. 6mo ago my friend and I installed billstein 5100s and raised the front end 1.5in to level the truck. Then put on BFG Ko2’s. Truck looks great and has drove nice until about 2 weeks ago.
When I am on the freeway at about 60mph I hear a humming/whining noise. The RPM’s are at 2K and other than the noticeable difference in noise the truck drives fine. I’ve tried a few things at freeway speed, putting it in neutral, and engaging the 4x4 but still the sound doesn’t change. When I step off the accelerator and let it coast it whines and stays loud until about 50mph. When I step on the gas the engine sounds normal and when put in neutral no engine noise can be heard. I’ve ruled out tire noise But that’s about it. Any advice with this problem would be much appreciated thank guys.

Level kits are awesome and super cheap way to make your truck look good.

I have largely had negative experiences with leveling kits. Wore out many parts from it. The CV axles could be worn already from being at an extreme angle.

I continually had to replace axles, UCA's and LCA's largely from the leveling kit. Granted this was on a GMC sierra, but I shouldnt have had to replace those parts 1x per year, which is what I did after the level kit.

Obviously toyota is a better and more reliable ride.

Long story short, take a look at your front axles.

Thank you for that will do. If I can’t identify anything visually with the axels then I’ll
Take it to my shop on Monday morning. Thanks again.

No problem. If your friend installed a diff drop as well then that wont be the problem. However the hum going away when you get off the gas makes me think its probably not the front bearings/hubs... but in all reality it could just be time for new bearings/hubs.

The other issue is that if you didnt get the camber re-adjusted after putting on the lift then the tires could be wearing unevenly on the outside and cupping, also making a humming noise.

I have had this same issue for a while now too ever since getting Nitro gears put in. Putting in ecgs bushing soon to see if that changes anything. Will keep posted

There is a question mark regarding the condition of your differential gears, but equally such your wheel bearings, lastly still your tires.

You have to understand that tires with a more aggressive tread will always inherently make more noise in comparison to OE rated passenger type tires. You switched from a P rated tire to LT (Light Truck). The treads catch the wind and interact with the road differently therefore noise will always be a side effect unwanted byproduct. The KO2s are supposed to not be loud, but my KOs were always incredibly annoyingly loud. I would still not rule them out, especially since they are he immediate mod you did and the ride was fine otherwise prior to.

This might be a rear wheel bearing issue. I went through this with my truck, it started whining/humming around 55MPH and slowly, but progressively got worse. After a while it would start doing it 25-30mph then as it got worse 25-45mph and above 55mph. Even changed tires/wheels, didn't go away. Turns out the rear axle vent clogged taking out the drivers side seal which in turn trashed the bearing.

Does no engine noise = no humming/whining? I’d search here for wheel bearing diagnosis and at least rule that out. Good luck!

    100% Rear wheel bearing issue.

I had it occur in mine a few years after I bought it. I only had 25k miles on it at the time.
