I purchased a used canopy for my 2008 Crew Cab with 6' bed. The guy I bought it from had a gen3 Taco and advertised it as being built for a 2nd gen. The problem I'm having is that while all the lines look good, it doesn't fit. The seller was advertising the fact that he had added new weather stripping to the bed rail mating surfaces and I'm wondering if it's just sitting too high as it appears to be bumping up against the rubber weather stripping/frame of my truck's rear slider. Now I'm not sure what model the canopy actually is, and while there's no badging indicating it is Leer, the depression in the fibreglass in the rear corners looks exactly like where the Leer logo would go.

The bottom of the canopy looks as though it's supposed to skirt or straddle the bed rails but that the aftermarket weather stripping is preventing it from doing so. I guess my question is, what sort of weather stripping/seal should this canopy have? I'm thinking if anything, a thin layer of foam tape more as an anti-skid since I think the skirting should prevent most of the leaks at that surface.

    It's definitely a Leer.
It's definitely not made for a Tacoma.

rear looks like it extends to far

I wonder what ways exist to prevent this.
Either having the seller help mount it onto your truck at the time of sale to verify fitment, or finding a model number to confirm it's for that truck,
if they even have model identification on them or isn't worn off like the Leer badge was

also 3rd gen shortbed is supposedly longer than 2nd gen shortbed

I have a Leer 100XR on my 2nd gen. I'll try to post some pictures of the fit later. What you've got looks all wrong in those pictures. The sides are supposed to hang over the bed rail. That cap is too long and too narrow for your bed.

I saw a picture of it on his truck and it fit better. I can only find a serial number on the shell, not a model number anywhere. I put it on with the seller's assistance and saw right away how it fit and figured I could either fix it or because it was a good price, live with it. I'm still going to try removing the weather stripping to drop it lower because it seems as though if it dropped about an inch, the truck window frame would nest inside the depression in the fibreglass at the front of the shell. Not only was it a good price, but there was no wait, unlike new canopies currently.

Thanks, that'd be great...Lots of pictures of the various mating surfaces, inside and out would be helpful.

The same shit everyone else has.
    That’s not a Tacoma shell.

    My 100XR fits right.

The tag in the shell will tell you what it is.

contact a dealer or Leer themselves for a breakdown of the tag.

The correct fit of my Leer XL on my '06 AC 6' bed is so good it actually aligns itself, even with replacement rubber seals. It just finds its correct alignment with little front/back L/R. Your shell is clearly too long and not correct for your year Tacoma.
    Sorry.

I just called the local dealer and gave them the serial number, they're going to call Leer and find out what model it is and call me back. Weird that they don't include the model number somewhere.

While the cab is the same on both 2nd & 3rd gens the bed is not. It may be for a 3rd gen but it wont fit the 2nd gen bed.

I just measured the canopy and the bed, canopy is 80" while the bed is 77.5" so definitely not the right cap.

I guess I'll keep using it for now until I can find the right size in the used market or someone to trade with. (Located near Vancouver Canada if anyone looking to trade.)

Since I haven't heard back from the Leer dealer yet, any thoughts on what model this is? I thought it was the 100XL because of the window split, but looks like the 100XL is actually frameless. Maybe this isn't a current model?

The local Leer dealer just called me back and it turns out that yes this is made by Leer, it's a brand called "Vagabond" or something he said, and it's equivalent to the 100XL. He also said that it's for a Gen3 Taco, 6' bed.

    Mystery solved.
