    Hi guys,

Picked up a used ARE contractor cap recently.
The cap is 60" wide and my bed is 61 1/2" (with bed cover).

The result is that the clamps do not work. I've had to shift the cap to the extreme of one side with the other barely catching.
I ordered some offset clamps that turned out not to be offset enough to use on both sides.

I'm wondering about bolting it down, but there's another problem here.
The bolt would have to be located in the square aluminum tube, not in the flat lip. This means the head of the bolt would interfere with my side doors closing fully.
Only thing I can think of is to counter sink the bolt so it's resting on the inside bottom of the tube. But I'd have to bore out a huge hole to do this.
Either that or get some kind of custom clamp made, or alter the ones I have by drilling another hole to increase the offset.
If I do this, the top clamp is not at all in the same plane as the bottom.

I need some wisdom, please! (put the cap back on craigslist and keep looking? I'll never get my money back on it.)

    Thanks

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Back to CL for one that fits properly. Any project - If you're going to spend time on it, just do it right.

I would suggest getting one that fits properly. But if you can get that one to fit and bolt it down, that would work just fine as well. Just make sure you use some sort of washers on the cap side of the bolts.

My A.R.E. DCU contractor cap is bolted to the top rail of my bed with j hooks.
Can you bolt an ell bracket of some kind to the side of the top rail and then through bolt it down or use your brackets to grab the lip of the ell piece. Then your cap would be centered on the bed.
Or get long J hooks and kinda bend them over at an angle so that they grab the lip of the bed.
