As mentioned many times on TW, adding Mods does Not always translate into a higher selling price.

IMO, around 200K miles is about when I have had to start replacing more parts even with a Toyota.

If $22 K is all you can spend, I would talk them down. Being patient and being able to spend a bit more should get you a truck you love.

Asking price aside.. what is up with this belief that these trucks magically start falling apart at 200k?

Maintenance? Like what? Draining amd filling a bunch of gear oil that's going to come out clean?

Mileage thrown off because of the larger tires? How do we know those tires have been on there the entire time?

    What magic?
What’s your expectation for mileage of a truck before maintaining it is cost prohibitive? Even if it’s 400k, you’re getting into something that is at least half dead

I dunno. I trust these trucks at 200k a hell of a lot more than any other vehicle

Fair. Feel you! Definitely in the same boat
Just think if you’re getting into one at that mileage the price should be appropriate

How do you know they haven't been? It's all about risk tolerance. Given the initial look of the truck I'd be reluctant to buy it at 90k miles. More than doubling that and it's a nope. Absurd asking price aside.

I agree, the only issue in this case is none of us know how this truck has been treated/maintained for the last 200k miles.

My opinion only, but even if that truck has the most spotless carfax with one owner its entire life since new, no accidents, oil changes every 5k, and all the major "K" services completed per the maintenance schedule, I still think the price is high, especially with the mods it appears to have. Bone stock would be preferable to me over bigger tires, etc. 200k miles is a lot of driving for even the most babied vehicles, even Toyotas. Random things start to crop up besides just the risk of mechanical items failing.
For reference only, KBB says the average mileage on a 2018 TRD Off Road is 96k miles, and in my area, says the average Dealer sales price is $19,381 with the average listing price at $20,181. With any car/truck with that high of miles, regardless of manufacturer, you are assuming a higher level of risk/failure by default. That truck could go another 200k, or break down during your first week of driving. That's the tough part of looking at pre-owned without any warranties. Good luck with whatever decision you make - just make sure you're happy with the decision, and don't look back!

Millions of 3Gs out there. No reason to settle for a truck you don't want. You're going to pay a premium for something in great shape and low miles.

I know it's all about risk, im just saying these trucks are inherently less risky than other vehicles. Isn't that why we buy them?

As far as initial looks go, it just looks like a leveled 3rd gen with a matching canopy. Not really sure what the red flags are that you're seeing

The overall mileage? I have a 2nd gen with the 4.0 so while not exactly the same, I've had literally zero problems with it in 184,000 miles. The normal rules about mileage don't always apply to these trucks imo

It looks like a clean truck. OP should at least go look at it. No way I'm paying 22k though, if the seller is serious about getting rid of it he'd probably come down into the teens..

The wheels are not my cup of tea. I'd go back to some stock alloys

There are much better deals out there, just too many miles for that price.

As far as credibility is concerned, that is considered a word by all major sources. Do your research.

The big tires at that mileage are the red flag.

Let's say the were put on after 50K miles. Let's also say, for easy math, that the circumference increase over stock is just 10%. That means the 150K miles with those tires was actually 165K miles and the actual miles on the truck over all are 215K. That's 15K miles that weren't accounted for in maintenance intervals.

Some are okay with this. I am not.

Do I think the truck is a POS that's going to break down and be scrapyard fodder in a year? No, of course not. I just wouldn't buy it with that situation.

I sure as shit wouldn't buy it for $20K+ either!

I understand it is a word. Never said it wasn't. Do your research and see its origins and why it is scorned.

Mountain car? Did they commute up and down to SB? If so, lots of extra engine wear, and CalTrans does use corrosive deicing spray on the roads up there so I’d worry about the frame as well. Also check for the dreaded crossover pipe leak at the rear of the engine, as well as the timing belt cover and the steering rack leaks in front, and did they get the peeling super white paint fixed around the fenders and window frames? Also, how about the other TSB’s- all fixed?

-Just giving you some other pointers to look for and questions to ask that you can use as discounts if you are still thinking about buying this truck.

Going by this thread, my one owner 2018 with 75k miles is now for sale.

I'm only asking one hundred and eight thousand for it.

I would pass on it. Way too many miles for it's age. First thought that came to mind for me was: "Former Taxi/Police/Delivery/shuttle vehicle?" I wouldn't even ask for any service history records.

My 2017 has 90k on it, no Toyota Nanny crap and everything works well on it. Thanks to Toyota, it’s getting a new super white paint job too! Selling it for 1 dollar per mile.
